Looking for any insight on fishing this area. We are doing a father son dove hunting trip Labor Day weekend. We have rented a house on the Frio near Concan. We plan on fishing as much as we can and are wondering what to expect. We have never fished the Frio but know it is a Chrystal clear hill country river. My 11 year old son absolutely loves clear creek fishing and has a couple small spinning setups perfect for this.

We are thinking light flouro line and small jigs, cranks, and worms will work. Is this accurate? I’m thinking we’ll acces the river from the house but is there anywhere else we should try? Any info would be greatly appreciated

Just got back from all last week parked at the Frio in our RV. Beautiful crystal clear river. Little low right now but river is flowing cool and clean. It’s like an aquarium. Full of fish....that see you a mile away. The few fish I caught were on a small curly tailed grub on a jig head. We spent almost every day sitting in river in chairs under a tent....and swimming. Had a guided trip red fishing and an RV spot in Jamaica Beach but with the coast evacuating we made this last minute change. We stayed at a decent RV/campground just past Garner State Park that had a great swimming hole on the river: http://www.elrodsfrio.com/

We were there also this weekend. http://www.elrodsfrio.com/ That lawsuit [censored] going on this a bunch of bull. One lady does not understand she does not own the water. She thinks because she owns the land to the middle of the the river, which she does not . she can control the water above it . She even went as far to as sweep the rock shelf close to the river since the warter was low

We go to the Frio every year and enjoy catching bluegill, catfish and smaller bass on light tackle in the cool clear water. Beautiful place.

Take some bait hooks. Small, small, small. The native bass in the river get a lot of lures tossed at them and they can see you with no problem. They are naturally easy to spook. There are large spot tail minnows in the river, you can catch quite a few of them out of the river and then fish with natural bait (thats what the bait hooks are for with worms). The next best bait in the river are small crawdads and or hellgrammites. Any baits that look like any of these will do you well. You will see schools of small catfish in the river, these are not reflective of the actual catfish population though they are fun to catch. Wait till dark and then fish the river. The big cats come out of from under rocks and their hiding spots and you can catch some really nice catfish.. The only mimic type bait I haven't mentioned is small spinners. Small spinners will do you well.

Its a beatiful place, soak it up, and enjoy.

Good Luck,
David

How big do the minnows in the river get? I've only seen small ones (too small to catch on a hook) around when the kids are fishing for perch. Thanks

I've never fished the frio, but we have a small creek that runs through our hill country lease.

My favorite lure to throw is the smallest castmaster spoon I can find. Works great in the super clear water.

I used a very small Cabela's or Strike King white spinnerbait. Maybe 1/16 or 1/8 ounce.
