Looking for any insight on fishing this area. We are doing a father son dove hunting trip Labor Day weekend. We have rented a house on the Frio near Concan. We plan on fishing as much as we can and are wondering what to expect. We have never fished the Frio but know it is a Chrystal clear hill country river. My 11 year old son absolutely loves clear creek fishing and has a couple small spinning setups perfect for this.

We are thinking light flouro line and small jigs, cranks, and worms will work. Is this accurate? I’m thinking we’ll acces the river from the house but is there anywhere else we should try? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

I have fished the Frio a lot in the Concan area. Have not fished it this year but I did last year. I went during a weekday with no holidays. Covid was also not a factor. I know the river stays busy in that area with swimmers and tubers this time of year. If the river is not crowded with swimmers and tubers you should catch some nice fish. All of the times I have fished the Frio in the Concan area there were very few people on the river. There are several public access points that you can enter and exit. You might have to walk some to escape the crowds (if any). From my past trips the deeper pockets of water hold fish. Plenty of sunfish and Guadalupe Bass. You can also try Garner State Park which is right up the road. Usually Garner is packed with people Labor Day Weekend as well. My be the Covid will keep the crowds down but don't count on it. Good luck and let us know how you do! thumb

If you haven’t yet, get some small in-line spinners. They tear those up on the Frio. Garner SP is fairly close to you, but if you haven’t reserved a pass it’s probably a no go. You have to reserve your day passes in advance for the State Parks now since Covid hit. I believe it’s to keep the numbers down. Some small topwaters would be ideal as well. If the fishing is tough, we typically do well with jugs and soft plastics as a “break glass” presentation. Something natural colored or smoke/clear will be the deal.

The only time I have been there unfortunately was not a fishing trip. The scenery was nice and not just the river and countryside.

Might be too late to help, but find a way to catch some river minnows, castnet, seine, trap, whatever. Use a size 6-8 hook and split shot about a foot from the hook. toss that into any pool of darker water you see and you will catch whatever is around. Hike the river and any area that is a little darker colored than the main current, even just a foot deeper, will concentrate the fish. alternately, 1/32 jigheads tipped with half a worm will do the same thing but you will get many more sunnies, especially those beautiful hyper aggressive longears, than anything else.
