We picked the boat up from the coast this weekend due to the storms in the gulf and now have it sitting at home. My brother and I are planning to fish all weekend but know nothing about lake fishing in dfw. I’ve spent a little time on PK and none on Whitney. What I do know is they are good sand bass and striper lakes for the area. Can anybody help me out when it comes to picking a lake and how to fish them this time of year? Any help is appreciated as we don’t know much about this style/type of fishing.

Fishing is tough now at PK. Not sure about Whitney. I would call some of the guides. Most are super nice guys and would point you in the right direction even if you do not use them. I will say this, there are a lot more positive posts this year on Whitney than about PK.

You can go out of the state park at Whitney. When you leave the river you can go right or left. There are 25 guides working Whitney right now so you should be able to get an idea of where the fish are. The top water bite is starting at first light and most of the guides are still using shad later in the day. You also might consider Lake tawakoni. It has striper and hybrids.

I would steer you toward Tawakoni as I feel like it’s a bit more forgiving in catching fish. Whitney can be real hot and cold. Texoma might not be bad either, given the liberal limits policies.

Whitney is getting a lot of pressure right now because it's been booming since the spring. The bite has slowed some but is still there at sunrise and hot/cold through out the day. Finding schools is the key but the fish seem to be getting better at hide and seek. You can still conduct a successful fishing trip, don't be afraid to move anywhere from Mcgowen bridge to near the damn.

I fished Whitney yesterday. We got on a good top water bite of mixed big sandies and small striper early west of Frazier creek back in the shallow water between the islands and brush. 4 to 8 fow. After that we moved out in deeper water directly south of there and found them in 30ish fow. I did not have shad but was able to catch a few on big green casting spoons. The bite was real slow and it got HOT quick. I was off the water by 10am.
