For a 5wt, especially as a beginner, it doesn’t matter. Anything in the 50-100 price point will work just fine.

Orvis Clearwater, Lamson Liquid, or Reddington would be good options. Buy local or from an independent shop with a good online store and they’ll probably line the backing for you for free saving you some time and money.

I use Okuma SLV much of the time. The most important thing is to get a center drag reel and not a click and pawl reel.

Why do you say this? I love my clickers.

My twin pennies would be to buy some nice line and some leaders and spend $35 at Cabelas or Bass Pro for a reel if they are just starting out. Your mileage might vary

I also use a couple of Okuma SLVs. I was specifically looking for center drag reels.

I am a Ross guy for sure But 100 bucks is not in the Ross price range. Look at the Bozeman Flyworks Patriot for 120 bucks. Just bought one and used in MT and landed some 4-6 lb fish and the drag is great for the price. Good looking reel too.

Click and pawl will work fine for most freshwater species, but I quickly learned their limitation when I started fishing saltwater. I have personally torn them to pieces carp fishing and have had several of my friends do the same. You can get an Okuma SLV or Integrity on Amazon for $55 to $65. I buy used on EBay for much less. If you are happy with your clickers, that is great. I am fishing for records and there are some big boys out there that I don’t want to get away because of a reel drag failure.

FWIW I keep hearing good things about the Piscifun Sword. A friend bought one last year and he’s stillbpleased with it. It’s used mostly in salt water.

Those Okuma 5wt reels must be dang good to use saltwater fishing.

Saltwater is a unique environment. I fish for records for species that weigh one pound or hundreds of pounds. For small species, and with power pro backing, a 5 wt would be fine. I use a 10/11 wt for the big stuff. In saltwater, a sealed drag is important because of corrosion. I have several Okuma SLV reels that I have fished with hard for over 25 years. The finish is coming off the reels, but the drags are still working perfectly.

I have an Okuma SLV on my 5 wt. Only use in fresh water, and largest fish caught on it were two 20 - 22 inch rainbows. Think I got it on sale somewhere for about $50. Unless they are fishing salt, the reel is the least important part of the setup; 99% of the fishing time it is just storing fly line for you. Save money on the reel and invest in the rod, fly line, leader and flies. Oh, and the setup is secondary to the presentation, so invest in some lessons too.
