So I am torn on a new rod choice. I like a Fast action for reds and (freshwater) bass because I use a strong, swift hookset. With trout, I tend to let them have it a little longer and I set the hook less aggressively so I don't yank the hook out of their mouth. I am thinking a moderate action in a Medium or MH would slow down the force of the hookset and be advantageous. Any thoughts or advice on this?

My choice is more which lure I'm slinging then what fish I'm catching. I use a 7 1/2' ML action rod for the paddle tail swim baits, not so much for the hook set, but give them that little bit less resistance to get the bait where the hook can do it's job.

On the other hand, I use a really stiff rod with Norton Sand eels, because I can give it a better action with the stiffer rod, and since bait is usually on a slack line when they hit, it's where it should be.

Just as big a consideration is your line, we use straight braid to the jig head, no leader so there's no stretch on the hook set. Again that's with plastics, topwaters and spoons are on baitcasters using mono.

7 ft ML w/ long handle

i'm sorta like Pat. a 7 1/2 med with mono for popping corks, a 7' med light for swim baits and twitch baits, a 6'9" for topwaters and rat tails and a 6'2" pool cue for flounder. 20 lb braid on all but the popping cork.

I appreciate the input. I was asking about action though. I am considering a moderate instead of fast action regardless of whether the rod is Medium or Medium Heavy. It's the action I can't decide on.

Paddle tail swim baits are a soft action rod.
Sand eel is a very fast, tip stiff action.
Topwaters are a fast action.
Don't throw meat, so can't give advice on croakies or shrimps.
