My lower unit started making a loud clicking sound when it’s in gear. Does anyone know a Good Person who also happens to be a great outboard motor mechanic?

Try Brook Bindel 325-998-2472.
He came to our house and installed a new axle on our boat trailer all in our back yard.
If I remember correctly he is certified to work on motors.
Great guy will definitely use him again.
Good Luck.

I have two Yamaha outboards and they are great motors but they do have one design issue IMO. Yamaha places both prop shaft seals in the same direction to prevent water from entering lower unit. OMC and Mercury place the two seals in opposite direction to prevent water from coming in and lower unit oil from going out. I know of 5 lower units ruined by oil going out, running lower unit dry of oil and ruining gears. I have replaced Yamaha prop shaft seals going in opposite direction and over a years use no water in or lost lower unit oil. There is a great simple method to replace these seals on YouTube. I use a 1 1/2 piece of pvc pipe cut 18 inches in length with a 1 1/2 pvc coupler added to the 18 inch pvc to drive seals back into position. Adding the coupler matches the diameter of the seals to help tap the seals into position. Slightly oil od and Id of seals when Installing.

After making a number of inquiries, I’ve decided to go with Hydro Tech Marine. I’m told they’re the experts on Yamaha motors. I talked to one of the techs today and after the conversation I had a good feeling about them. Hope it works out. I’ll let everyone know how it it goes.
