Wow, can you not figure that out for yourself what to do with the extra line?

You could always use a different line as a backing then spool 100 yards of line on your reel. That will let you fill two reels with your main line. No left over line.

I mean I am sure I could not figure it out for myself, just figured there may be some things I had not thought of. Yes, your suggestion was mentioned multiple times in other responses...Thank you for the feedback though.

Wow. Very helpful. Not at all derogatory or demeaning. This is why people come here for help. Good job.

There's not a reel anymore that I don't spool up with backing, first. Just a sensible way to save money and line. I used to spool a full reel with braid and when that line needed replaced, I would reel it onto another empty reel and then would have fresh braid that hasn't been used. I decided I was better off with just doing backing on everything but that is another option if you've never thought of it....

I use them to learn to tie new knots.

I watched a video from Mike McFarland on Fork about spooling reels. He said look at your reel capacity and how much line per turn it picks up. Take that and put on "X" number of turns of backing, then fill with new line. I did it and had to make a couple of minor adjustments on the number of turns, but it made sense to me. I can take a 200 yard spool and get 3 reels out of it. Over 60 yards is a long way on a football field, and does anyone really cast as far as they think they do? Always wondered about that!

I wrap my spools with electrical tape and only wind 50yds of line. 150 yard spool fills 3 reels. I can't cast that far.

Have note heard of that one. Makes sense. I like it.

This. I have a couple of these boxes with spools that don't have enough for a spool of line but plenty for a dozen or more leaders.

I use my left over line as leader material. Win win in my book.

Strat A Caster said he doesn't use leaders.

Best approach is what several said, figure out how much backing to use to get the most use from amount on the spool.

As far as what to do with what you already have that is too short to comfortable put on top of backing, you could use IT for backing.

I like someone's reply that he uses it to practice learning new knots.
