Hello everyone, hate to ask this but what’s the best bait for reds on the Texas coast this time? I’ll be surf fishing, possibly off a pier too possibly, I’m from the north Texas area and very rarely get down to the coast, I’m gonna have 2 solid days of fishing and would like the best experience possible. Thank you.

Fresh mullet would be best and filter out some of the trash pecker fish but reds will eat just about anything.

Cut ladyfish is by far the best bait for the big ones. But it is a big secret, so don’t tell anybody. You should be able to catch the ladyfish with a gold spoon.

Cut square chunks of Ballyhoo and put your hook about 14-16" above the weight. Ladyfish are great also.

We love live mullet because reds, trout and flounder all love it. Carolina style.

I'm with the live bait crew as the live bait attracts faster than having them come to you. Still wouldn't turn down the lady fish secret as it has worked many times before. Smaller live crabs if you can find them are excellent bait. Just don't use blue crabs under the regulations!

Live mullet crew here also. Either buy from bait store or cast net.
