Brad Whatley gets hit by a driver that fell asleep but has to pay 15 to 20k because of Michigan no fault insurance law? Story is on wired 2fish.

Glad he is ok, glad I live in Texas! There should never be such a thing as "no fault". That's ridiculous. I saw Phoenix was helping him out. Very commendable!

I agree no fault sucks if you can prove the other person did it. Some times it's really hard to prove (say red light runner) unless there is a witness as the other person just lies their [censored] off.

My question is why not have insurance for the accessories. I don't have a high end boat so maybe I don't understand. But I added insurance for my graphs, TM, and poles in case they were stolen. Can't he get extra insurance for this?

Sounds like it was the truck that had the insurance issues with a lift kit, wheels, topper, etc. Not sure why his policy would not cover atleast some of those things

One could only assume he didn't include the value of those modifications when he got his quote and purchased his insurance policy

Generally speaking most auto policies require a separate endorsement for Custom Equipment. If one was in force in this case it may have coverage limits that don't address the total amount of loss. Haven't seen many standard policies that offer an $15-20K in coverage for Custom Equipment. You can usually get coverage (I.E.- Hagertys), the question is cost.

I'm confused how he is coming out of pocket on this? If he has his insurance correct, he should be able to file uninsured motorist coverage on the truck and of course the normal collision claim on the boat, or possibly uninsured on that side as well?

It's a really itty situation either way, and that no fault law needs to be updated.

EDIT: Scratch that, I read up on the Bassmaster article and it seems he just didn't have the proper endorsements on his vehicle to cover the accessories.
