Thanks so much for all the warm welcomes and tips from everyone on my last post. We are just now getting back home and cleaned up and thought id tell everyone about us finally getting rid of our losing streak. Went out with some 1 inch cubes of chicken breast i had marinated in strawberry jello and garlic powder for a couple days. Used a 5/0 circle on a 7'(not sure how many inches but i think 4?) Spinning combo and then I cast out and set in my rod holder and waited while my son and I went looking for bass and sunfish with our other polls. Not too long after that we finally caught one!!! A catfish I mean lol. My son was soooo happy it was an awesome sight, and I finally got to show him that sometimes when your fishing.... Ya catch fish lol. Later on we ended up meeting a nice couple that was bank fishing for catfish too and we got to talking. They were so nice and even gave me my first cast net!!! I never had anyone to teach me fishing stuff before so I made it a point to teach my kids and to spend as much time as possible with them so I was lost as to how to use this thing but since id been looking at them to buy recently I knew this guy had just saved me 30$ minimum. We couldnt have been more greatful and the dude was even kind enough to teach me how to use it without making me feel like a complete loser lol. My son thought it was the coolest thing once i started getting the hang of it...(kinda) and we caught a few blue gill and even a small crappie! All and all it was a great time and we had a blast. We plan on going out again maybe even tomorrow night. Thanks again for all the tips and pointers I feel like everything finally came together tonight. Now just to make it consistent and maybe even bigger.[Linked Image]

Man I’m glad you had some success!
Kudo’s to that kind couple also!
FYI, after I got my first cast net I practiced throwing in my yard, I think a lot of folks do-
After a while muscle memory takes over and you won’t have to concentrate so much each throw, and YouTube has a ton of videos of different techniques, don’t be afraid to try different ones till you find what way works for you-
Good job!

What has happed to you does not define who you are-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

Further Congrats on your other thread, plus another suggestion, as to keeping logs/notes there.

I recall in 1984 or 1985, I had two young teens teach me on the Trinity River how to throw a cast net. I taught my daughter a few years later & she still remembers how. Those two boys taught me how it is almost an art form, not quite a dance, but most interesting, as well as how to hold the fingers as well. One I taught only made one mistake, he forgot the imortant part, puttng the end loop over your wrist/had, so as not to set the net free to go to the bottom of the river back in 1995. Luckily I had a second net handy.

Gotta start somewhere! Congratulations!

I kinda get the feel that you’re a novice at fishing and it’s great to see you getting your kids involved. No disrespect intended here but read the TPWD Outdoor Annual and learn rules, regulations, and laws and teach them to your little ones as well.

Keep on doing what you’re doing! fish

Yes Im by know means a pro or even a long time fisherman. I got into fishing once i had kids but do know the laws and regulations as well as making sure to teach my kids them and to leave your fishing site better than you found it. We are all big animal lovers so respect for wildlife is definitely big for us. Thanks Osborn! I hope so too. While its hot we usually go just once a week but when it begins to cool we will be going as much as possible so hopefully this is just the beginning of our success!

None of us started out as seasoned fisherman. Keep up the hard work and have fun with those kiddos
