I have a house rented about 5 miles from SLP and wanted to know how rough is it to get to the beach and fish. Is there good access or do I need 4 wheel drive. Can I drive on the beach and park. Never fished there so I don't know. Don't want to have to haul a bunch of stuff by hand. Just want to sit under our umbrella and enjoy some decent fishing. We will be going in Sept. Is that a good time to fish the pass.
Thanks in advance
Worthy

Late August and September are probably the best months for San Luis pass. Lots of beach access but a lot of people do get stuck when they get off the main driving areas. The big bull red run should be in full swing, especially on the gulf side. The tarpon fishing will be peaking about that time also

Their is a San Luis pass camera on this site. You can actually control the camera yourself for a few minutes at a time.

I was down there last week, lots of folks camped out, you can get right up to the water there. That pass cam will be helpful asset.

There may be warning signs there about getting into the water..wading etc. It can be a very dangerous place as a lot of lives have been lost there. Just be cautious .

Thanks V, I have actually experienced fear there. I was with some friends fishing and I waded out "literally" about 5'. Tide changed and started sucking the sand out from under my feet and I started worrying that I wasn't going to get back to hard ground. Yes, that is a very dangerous place. I don't wade out to cast, if I can't reach it from water just over my ankles, it doesn't need to be reached.

You hit the nail on the head there....That bottom will fall out from under your feet and away ya go...Pass the word. The more people know about that place, more lives won't be lost.

Galveston side there is access to beach. Careful as you enter the main beach access area, there's usually deep sand there. Get a good running start before driving through it.
I'm heading down there Monday until following week. If you get stuck or need help, pm me. Surf fishing may be shaping up nicely middle of next week.

I'll second JackMason's comment on the soft sand. Once you get out onto the beach it is wet enough and packed enough to where it is not a problem though. The good news is there is almost always some other people there, so you have a good chance to find a good samaratin to help you out. If you have a 2WD it may be worth investing $20 in a tow strap just in case the good samaratin doesn't have one.

I have a all wheel drive Honda Pilot. I think if I set it to sand it should make it through, don't you think?

You should be fine. Just keep steady through the soft stuff.
