Anyone have any experience with these ? They inject doses of herbicide into the cadmium layer so the tree will die .

My battle with the Black Locusts is at a standstill . The small trees are easy to control with Roundup and Remedy but the larger ones just keep growing . Cutting a big one down just stimulates the roots to produce more trees .

Don't want to ruin the soil with diesel or salt .

Thoughts ?

have you tried girding them? That will kill most trees.

They show two different injectable shells. Diamondback is Glyphosate(Round Up) and Copperhead is Imazapy. That does not show to control Locusts on the label.

It works but it also stimulates the locust roots to make more trees . Looking for something to break the cycle .

Resprouts are tough on any species, there is a couple things one can do to help the odds on a good kill. one spray early in the day, plants stop moving water in the heat to reduce loss, that is why you see wilt in the later day.Spray complete bands around the trunk(s) a space in spraying can lead to reporting. Do not over mix chemicals, some plants shock kill, meaning the foulage will drop and respout. Add a small amount of oil, there are several oils that can be used on plants. Yes diesel can be used in a mix to keep treatment on the plant, but only spray the trunks and it is a mix, not more than 1/4 % of mix. Do not foliage spray mix, it must be basal (such as Garlon- 4). The chemical Remedy is good on woody plants, expensive and must be treated early in the day, no blooms on the plant, oil carrier and stump or cut and spray. if you cut it spray it before the cut is healed or sap rises in the wound.


Dow's Grazon P+D herbicide (Picloram + 2,4-D) to be very effective in treating honeylocust sprouts -- they used a 1% foliar solution, applied to both honeylocust and black locust seedlings.

Tordon RTU (picloram) is a premixed general use herbicide labeled for cut-surface applications only. This herbicide kills treated black locust stems, but vigorous sprouts develop from roots. Stump treatments that do not effectively control the tree's root system may necessitate several additional years of foliar treatment of root sprouts

I use glyphosate as a foliar on trees 4' or less with good results (no spreading) . Remedy works well on smooth trunks up to 4" diameter when spraying the entire trunk from 12-24" high (I use vegetable oil to help it "stick" ) .

Kinda nervous about the chemical use as I have Black Walnut and peach trees out there .

I'm not cursing them because Black Locust is a really good wood for fence posts , arbors , etc . (although you have to let them cure for a couple of years so they won't sprout ) .
Caveat : Black Locust is NOT to be used for cooking-it's poisonous .

Sendero herbicide is great

i used ERASE to try and kill some cactus and killed a pecan tree that was 20' downhill. guess the run off got it. friggin cactus is still there.

If you used Eraser herbicide that is just gly and has no soil residual or activity

My neighbor used this to control some weeds and killed 7 of my trees. Seemed pretty effective.

Do the technique Called Hack and squirt. Look up on you tube. Remedy and diesel. May take a week to display its unhappiness. Hit it again. Once it is very apparent you are making 80% headway. Cut the down with chainsaw and then spray the perimeter of the stump. IT WILL WORK

I also use the Eraser which I believe is 34% glyphosate. I have cut down three cottonwoods from 20" to 30" diameter and just drill holes into the stump in the cambrian layer right under the bark and pour the straight Eraser into each hole (maybe 1 oz or so in each) and the trees drop totally dead within 7-10 days. On one tree I left it alone for about 6 months and then got tired of cutting off the suckers so I just used an axe to cut a wedge in the bark down to the wood at each spot it was sprouting and then I poured the glyphosate into each wound. The tree never put out another sprout.

How big are the trees? I was going to suggest the hack n squirt method as well.

I’m going to check to see if my HOA will allow flamethrowers. If so, I’m getting one, and I will come help you out.

Most are in the 4" -6" trunk diameter range . Got a few over 8" . I'm using Remedy/vegetable oil . Really don't want to poison the ground with diesel .
