I tried to look on the internet and it's confusing. I would call Texas Parks and Wildlife with your situation.

I’m pretty sure it’s where you register it

If you paid taxes in another state, bring proof of that to TPWD with you and you only pay the difference ... if any.

To be safe and avoid any confusion, unless it's a dealer and they are required to collect the taxes, just pay the taxes in Texas when you register the boat.

And as Jim said above: Call TPWD for certain clarification.

And you didn't ask, but download the forms you need (one for the engine and one for the boat) and print them off. You'll need the seller's signature on both of them. You'll also need a DETAILED bill of sale signed by both parties. I'm going to register mine tomorrow and just talked with them last week.

bought mine in missouri, had all titles notarized and bill of sale for ea. hull/trlr/engine and paid tax in Tx. only.

you pay when you register here, out of state won't collect until it is registered with them so just register here.

Be sure to pay taxes immediately to avoid penalty charges. I found out the hard way after I bought a boat out of Louisiana.

I may be wrong, but I believe that has been shelved due to the virus.

Just registered mine this morning. I had the proper forms filled out correctly. Wasn't there 5 minutes.

But I bought mine here in Texas so the sales tax wasn't an issue. I paid it here.

As for the 30 day limit ...... It was 41 days since the date of the purchase and there wasn't a problem.

I just bought mine, Texas does not have a sales tax on a used boat, they call it a "use" tax. I bought mine out of New Mexico. I only paid taxes in Texas. 6.25% was the rate. Be sure if you buy a boat with a trailer that you get a separate bill of sale if possible. It makes it easier.

Since you appear to be in Dallas, you will only pay the Texas tax rate to have it registered in Texas. I hope you have some extra bucks laying around. You can't go in there and tell them you are paying $2,000 for a $50,000 boat.

Be safe,
