What was your experience?

Back in the '60s and a good part of the '70s Beirut was considered the Paris of the middle east. Nice hotels and restaurants, very vibrant nightlife. A real tourist destination. People got along.

Then the sectarian (political) infighting started and it went down hill fast.

Sounds like the OT

It was a slum pretty much. There were a lot of AK47โ€™s in sight. I made no friends there.

Lost some of my Brothers at that Hotel. Back in late 74' I was aboard the USS Trenton/ an LPD. During the Cyprus uprising we were sent there to pick up a Jordanian Prince, his wife, and daughter and transport them to Beirut . Artillery shells flew over the ship until some cannon cocker found out we were allowed to dock there. It was the first US Warship ever to do that. They met us by throwing liter bottles of water on the deck, amongst other stuff. I don't think they liked us!!

TMZ is reporting it was 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate that exploded. If true dat be a lot of fertilizer. To compare to the West explosion per Wiki - According to its last filing with the EPA in late 2012, the company stated that it stored 540,000 pounds (270 short tons; 240 t) of ammonium nitrate and 110,000 pounds (55 short tons; 50 t) of anhydrous ammonia on the site
