How do you guys go about choosing your rod length? Maybe there is a some king of rule of thumb determined by fishing depth, technique, etc.?

Buy what fits you best. Its too subjective for a one size fits all.

In that case, are you saying the fisherman's height is a factor as well?

I don't think he is talking about angler height.

For me I have rods from 6'6" to 7'8". I use all the time. Lately I like the ones that are 7'2" the best. I am 5'10".

I like 7 for TW, SB, CB , I go as short as 6.6 for finesse spinning, and as long as 7.6 for my C Rig and deep CB.

Just remember this: The longer the rod, the more line it can move when you set the hook (and move the bait, for that matter). I prefer longer rods (7') for baits with bigger hooks like topwaters, worms, jigs (Arky style), and spinnerbaits to make setting the hook easier. Hair jigs, grubs, and other baits with small diameter hooks like crankbaits are fished on 6' rods.

Just my education from many years of doing it.

I choose rod length depending on the technique I am fishing.

What he is saying is that you should make the decision based on what feels comfortable.
Height really has no bearing in it if your comfortable with it. I'm 6'5 and I have 6' rods that I use every trip, I also have some that are 7'6 as well. One of my HS boys was barely 5' and he used 7'+ rods regardless of what he was doing and had an 8'er that he threw deep diving cranks with.

I am one who prefers shorter rods. Most everything I use is 6'6" to 7'3". My favorite pitchin stick is 6'6". I'm sure height can play a roll in the decision but for me it's a comfort and feel thing.

7 foot is the average rod

I use longer for open water and long range casts like deep crank, swimbait, glide baits, c rig, a rig etc. Up to 8 feet.

A shorter rod will be more accurate for you if your casting to targets.

Most all of mine are 6' 6" to 7' 6" and vary by technique and not really to do with height of myself at 6' 7". fish

I have been thinking about a longer one for crankbait fishing with the bigger lures. cheers

Ah got ya! Thanks for clarifying because I'm not the biggest fella myself and I was thinking about getting a 7'6" rod but wasn't sure if that might feel awkward. But I do have some 7'3"s for carolina rigging and deep cranking and I don't have any issues with them. I also agree with a lot of the feedback on the shorter rods being best for flipping and pitching.

I’m in the minority here. I don’t know how to prove it, but I think you have better sensitivity with shorter rods. You get better accuracy with shorter rods too!

It ain’t the length, it’s how you use it!!!! Haha!!!

I like most of my rods on the longer side (no pun intended) Most deep-water applications I prefer a 7'4" up to 7'6" and for deep cranking a minimum of 7'4". Even with flipping I typically use a 7'3" rod but I also have a handful of 7 footers that I use for stuff like spinnerbaits/chatterbaits/squarebills and flipping close range stuff.

Thats my money fish

This is correct.
