All this talk of spinnerbaits but I didn't see one mention of trailer hooks. So..

Trailer hooks - how many of you use them and how often does it pay off?

Not sure on amount of time it helps, but worth having on.

If I add a trailer hook, I lose the lure. 100% of the time.

Even around sparse cover. That trailer hook will find something to snag.

I’m not nearly the fisherman as you all but I do catch some bass. With that said, I don’t think I’ve touched a spinner bait in 30 years. I’ve just lost all confidence in them. When I was a kid, my go to lures were a Rapala and H&H spinner in yellow and black. Of course, we fished them wrong but always seemed to catch fish with them. I’m fairly successful nowadays with wacky rigged Senkos and Ned rigs so I don’t use other choices which, I know, is dumb. I guess I need to jump on these and give them a try again. They just look so intimidating like a bunch of hangers all twisted up in my closet. I look into my tackle box, see them calling me and look the other way. 😀

I used to fish a spinnerbait almost year long. Only in the coldest months would I not have a spinnerbait on.

Its a great locator bait. You can cover water fast.

Spinnerbaits were big at the 1996 Megabucks.
The first day of that tournament I fished with a guy using no 10 blades and he caught 16 pounds. He used the same bait the next day and was in the top ten. The third day a northern blew in and he tried to stay on the south bank, getting drenched and fell out of contention.
The third day, Jimmy Houston. He was in second and stayed there that day. We fished his clown colored spinnerbait all day.
The next day was canceled due to high wind and on the final day I fished with Jeff Fletcher. He had been fishing a jig and spinnerbait. He ended up just out of the top ten. I felt bad about that as I caught a 4 pounder from the back when I should have probably just been watching. He had already passed the place I got the fish from so it wasn't too bad.

The next year I was an observer at the finals at White Rock Lake and rode with Woo Daves. He didn't do well there but he came from behind the last day on Richland Chambers and caught 20 pounds the last couple hours of the cutoff day with a big willow leaf spinnerbait. He showed it to me and told me to keep it.
That next year Mark Menendez caught a huge bass at the RC qualifications with a spinnerbait. At the time its was the largest bass every caught in a BASS tournament.
I was a weighmaster at the qualifications, just to measure fish. I got a good look at it.

Do not use them. Have never noticed any significant difference in fish landing. What I did notice was a lot more hang ups. I did see a trailer hook at a tackle show this year that allows you to use soft plastic trailer with the trailer hook. I think it was made by Hayabusa. It was displayed at a Shimano booth. That did get me to thinking about it again but have not tried it yet.

I never use a Trailer Hook. I am always trying to throw my SB in junk or limb or bushes, I fish them hard and in heavy cover.

I use a trailer hook whenever fish are swiping at the bait. Normally you don't need it.

I hide them in a grub of some kind. Twin or curly tail.

Arguably, the best spinnerbait fisherman....also, one of the most prolific masterbaiters.

Here’s a very comprehensive guide to spinnerbaits I found.

http://www.bassdozer.com/articles/spinnerbait-blades.shtml

I haven’t had any Booyah spinnerbaits break on me yet but will check out other brands people have mentioned.

This past Thursday I unexpectedly caught my first flathead (yellow) catfish on a spinnerbait. It weighed over 5lbs! I caught my first blue catfish on a spinnerbait last month. It was also over 5lbs! I am liking spinnerbaits even more since I can catch big catfish on them as well as bass.

Always have a SOB tied on. 3/8 oz., white, single gold ‘thumper’ willow, twisted eye!
