We made our first trip to the coast. We spent 3 days in Jamaica Beach on a canal, which is the only spot we could fish being boatless. We caught redfish (1 keeper), black drum (1 keeper), sheepshead (3 keepers), specks, hardhead catfish(I think) ladyfish, sand trout, and croaker. Planning another trip over Thanksgiving and maybe get a guide for some bull reds. Me and my 4 kiddos had a blast! We did better than I thought we would being bankbound.

Very cool! We are headed just west of Jamaica beach next week and plan to bring some spinning gear. Any tips on bait(s) to use? Were those all caught strictly in the canals? I may have access to kayak for fishing along shore on bayside.

If you have a kayak, check out snake island cove (west of jamacia beach, east of sea isle). You can put in at Sea Isle if you want to be closer, west side of JB (you may have to look for a break in the fence along Bob Smith Dr. (don't worry, you'll see lots of kayakers doing the same). If you choose to put in at JB, fish west along the bay shore. Live croakers work if you want to spend the money, live mullet if you can catch them, live shrimp. I prefer gulp baits in purple/chartreuse and root beer/chartreuse. If the fish are out, it doesn't matter (_much_) what baits you throw. Gold spoons are always a good fallback.

Snake Island Cove: https://www.google.com/maps/place/29%C2%B009'28.7%22N+95%C2%B002'00.7%22W/@29.157964,-95.0357227,894m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x863f0e986d936d5b:0xe2aa23def31d90d1!2sCrystal+Beach,+Bolivar+Peninsula,+TX+77550!3b1!8m2!3d29.457177!4d-94.6396378!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d29.157964!4d-95.0335339

Place to put in at JB (you can see a car parked in the Google Earth pic, and the path where people walk): https://www.google.com/maps/place/29%C2%B011'30.5%22N+94%C2%B059'07.2%22W/@29.191796,-94.9860769,447m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x863f0e986d936d5b:0xe2aa23def31d90d1!2sCrystal+Beach,+Bolivar+Peninsula,+TX+77550!3b1!8m2!3d29.457177!4d-94.6396378!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d29.1917963!4d-94.9853267

The whole shoreline is great fishing, though. If you want to load up the kayak and drive a few minutes (or, if you're in better shape than me, you can paddle), and check out the State Park (you'll have to buy a day pass). But Lake Como is pretty good at a falling tide, you can see where the water flows in Google Earth: https://www.google.com/maps/place/29%C2%B012'46.3%22N+94%C2%B057'12.7%22W/@29.21287,-94.9550223,893m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x863f0e986d936d5b:0xe2aa23def31d90d1!2sCrystal+Beach,+Bolivar+Peninsula,+TX+77550!3b1!8m2!3d29.457177!4d-94.6396378!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d29.21287!4d-94.9535338

Have fun and report back!

Thank you so much for the information! I am heading out in my father-in-law's kayaks, so this information is very helpful. Cheers!

Also, if you're feeling lazy, just go paddle the canals in the morning with a topwater (bone color). That's should be good for a few schoolie trout. You an also go out in the dark in the canals and fish under people's lights (live shrimp if you don't care about the size of the fish). They tend to get pissed, but, you know, public spaces and all. Worst case they'll turn off their lights and go inside, in which case, you just paddle to the next house. There are also a lot of people who always leave their lights on, so you should be able to find lots of places where the lights are on but no one is fishing them.
