Reports coming in that the T head at the end of the pier has collapsed due to the high waves and wind.

Would be nice if they can keep the remains down there for structure and re-build. LOTS of memories fishing all night on that pier as a teen and younger 20's.

I'm just guessing that most of the material that collapsed was wood, and very little of it is left anywhere close.

Wonder if there's any plans to rebuild?

I think it's up in the air still.

91st street pier in Galveston was pretty devastated after Ike, and was eventually rebuilt: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nsaum/2888025313

So there's a precedent! Not sure where the funding to rebuild 91st street pier came from though -- from the first article it sounds like they're going to attempt to get the feds/state gov to foot 75% of the bill. Cross your fingers.

That place has been a fixture on the coast for so long that it would be a shame to see it not be repaired.

I remember the last time it was damaged and had to be rebuilt, in the 80's I think. They built it then with removable sections, plainly seen in the pics, so the sections could be removed and placed on the dunes when a storm was coming. That way they saved the pier and saved the dunes. I guess they forgot to remove them.

Mayor said in an interview they are only removed in the event of a Cat 1 hurricane or higher and it takes 3 days to remove the concrete slabs. This storm went from a depression to a Cat 1 storm in less than 24 hours so they didn't have time.
