For those using Hi Viz line, are you all using a leader or direct tying?
I have researched it a little bit and there seems to be mixed reviews on whether a leader is necessary, so figured I would ask here.
I am sure opinions will be mixed here as well, but I trust reviews & opinions here better than I do anywhere else on the interwebs when it comes to fishing; any insight from those in the know is much appreciated, thanks!

I am far from a crappie expert but I've enjoyed using high viz braid with a 6lb mono leader. I have a lot of faith in my leader knot and I like using the high viz to detect bites.

I use a hi-vis braid with no leader. Livescope has shown me that the fish do not seem to be bothered by braid straight to the jig. If you prefer to have a leader, no problem, use what you you are confident in wink

It depends on the conditions and the water clarity. In situations with ultra clear water, especially river conditions, a 4-6lb fluorocarbon leader makes the difference between lighting them up and getting skunked, in murky lakes it doesn’t make a big difference.

No leader is needed period. I catch them in all kinds of water color with no leader.

You might look for a high visibility line that is low visibility when in the water.

I use high vis braid, I like a leader for a couple of reasons. first , I like loop knot , so my jig hangs right, Don't have to readjust after every bump.
second , when I hang up solid , breaking 20 lb braid is a pain.

and third , a leader might not make a difference until it does, That mythical 3 lb crappie may have got that big by being line shy. smile

your mileage may vary

good luck

I don't use a "Leader" in a normal sense. But i do use a snap to change out jigs quicker. the snap is about two feet above the jig and also helps me pick up the jig/line on livescope.

but my line is 20 lb yellow braid above and below the snap/swivel.

Seems like this question comes up as often as who makes the best Crappie Rod.

Personal Preference comes into play on this issue like anything else with regards in fishing.

Do what makes you happy. Fish with whatever makes you happy.

Try both ways.

Use a Leader or Dont use a Leader:

It doesn't matter until it does.

Color of bait doesn't matter until it does.

Netting or Slinging a fish in the boat doesn't matter until it does.

I personally use a leader.

That's my personal preference. It makes me happy.

Good Luck finding and using what makes you happy.

Tie directly to the jig with a loop knot. Most east Texas lakes are on the murky side so I don't think line visibility is a problem.

To whom much is given, much is required.

Thank you for the replies, gathering from responses it seems its a more of a personal preference thing, I was just worried about fish being line shy but apparently isn't an issue except possibly in really clear water if at all. I am going to pickup some Hi Viz and also a small spool of flouro to play around with & find what works best for me. The two lakes I primarily fish are usually stained so will start with Hi Viz direct tie. One lake clears up from time to time, if happen to be out there on a clear water day & feel like I am not getting as many bites as I should be I will tie on a leader & see if makes a difference to me. Thanks again for the responses & Happy Fishing!
