I'm looking to fish Amistad Thursday/Friday. I've never been to, or fished the Rough Canyon area. How does it fish this time of year? Anything to watch out for or areas to avoid for a newbie? Any info/advise would be appreciated..

Never caught a lot of fish up there, other than when the white bass are running. If I were up there, I would throw a weightless wacky worm around any structure you can find. Some good coves with brush but they might be high and dry. (lake is 50' low)

I would go south towards the main lake. There are some really good ridges and drop offs on both sides of the Devils after you go under the power lines. I don't recall how low the water has to get before it comes into play, but there's an old dam on the Devils that may be fishable if Amistad is down 50 feet. Watch for it on your sonar.

From my understanding it closes from Friday afternoons until Monday morning. Not sure of the exact hours.

I primarily fish Rough Canyon. Always south of the boat ramp out toward the main lake as others have said. If you like a cold beer and a great pizza when it gets hot at mid-day, stop at the little store up hill from the south boat ramp at the Rough Canyon Recreation Area. Ice cold mugs and the pizza is good too. I cant speak to the lake level as its been a while since I was there. As hot as it has been, I would be looking at deeper cover. I wish you well and hope for a successful fishing report when you get back. There are some beautiful spots north of the boat ramp if you are of a mind to loo around.

People boated for many many years without it If you are patient and wait till the suns shining bright you can easily see the shallow water and hazards. If you want to fish early I strongly agree with the map comment. Amistad is a different animal. You can go from 100 feet to 1 foot in a space of ten feet, especially at this level. Mapping is pretty good out there and will guide you around the hazards.

Thanks to all for the information, much appreciated, it will help. The pizza/beer may be the best of all. I'm just gonna take the laid back approach and try to enjoy myself, catching fish will be a bonus.
