caught a mess of channel cat at grapevine. when cleaning them there guts where full of mud and stunk like [censored]. I was not going eat anything that smelled like that. they were alive when I got them home. I have dressed lots of fish and have never had to dump a mess of fish before.

It'd from them eating shad. I hope you didn't waste them.

Man those channels will eat just about anything! I often wonder what makes a certain fish stink so bad. Sometimes we will catch a big Blue that stinks so bad you don’t want it in your boat long enough to even snap a photo. Smells like smelly stanky nasty sour crotch. Like Boys Town Nuevo Laredo.

no, sir. I don't think that was from eating shad. It was like sour mud.

This is one reason I target Blues & Yellows. I can tell when I cut up a Channel, as compared to a Blue. When you slice into the gut cavity, the Channel will have a stinkier smell that catches you qwik. A Blue does not. I try to stay away from slicing open the stomach, unless I am really wanting to investigate.

Channel cats have flavor, same for yellow cats. Blues are like tilapia, only flavor is what you add. Wife and daughter like them because they don't taste like fish.

One of the reasons I always fillet cats is because the guts can stink so bad. Fillet the meat off the bones, run the knife along the skin side and toss them into ice water to leech out any blood. Problem solved.

We had a 5-6lb Blue puke nasty range cubes in the live well recently. Someone had been feeding or chumming. Didn’t smell bad but was nasty looking and clogged up the drain.
