When fishing at night, what do you guys try to key in on?
What are your favorite baits and techniques?
I have some vacation days coming up and going to try to beat the heat and the crowds.

I like to keep it pretty simple at night.
Black Hilldebrandt Spinnerbait, Texas rig Berkley 10” Red Shad Power Worm and another Texas rig with a Craw or Creature bait.
I like to cover a lot of water with the Spinnerbait. If I come up to some sort of structure or points (dock, Brush, boat ramp, Etc) I will flip the worm or craw/creature bait. Also if I go through a stretch where I catch a couple on the Spinnerbait I will turn around and go back through the area with the Texas rigs and slow down to try to pick up hopefully other fish.

Don’t forget a big topwater like a wakebait or jitterbug. Chatterbaits and crankbaits can be useful too and since I’m more interested in big bites than numbers, I’ll throw a jig with a bulky trailer more than a worm even though sometimes they prefer a worm. Pretty much, I fish at night just like I do during the day, just slower and more carefully.

Dock lights can be key. If you've got a lake that has a bunch of them and you know the lake well enough to be able to move around efficiently and safely at night this can be a killer pattern. The trick is making sure you rotate through a bunch of docks with lights. On any given night a dock may hold zero fish or a couple tanks. That could also change throughout the night. So set up a milk run and rotate through it.

I'll try to hit natural cover on the water, and features that pretty pronounced.

Spinnerbaits yo-yoed on dropoffs and humps. Worms or jigs fished in the same places.

I agree with the DOCKS, but with a different twist.........Find docks that have a distinct depth change a few yards from the dock and fish that shelf. The bigger fish will move in and out from this drop. The dock may be good, but the depth change will almost always be better. And a dock that sits near a steep rocky or gravel shelf will be even better.
