We are now officially in the heat of the Summer. Time to buckle down and focus, because the easy fish have been picked off. The premium is now placed on utilizing electronics to discover condensed groups of fish on select pieces of offshore cover. Also, the timing for fishing these locations is important, as the heat will cause the fish to suspend and become inactive. Of course, the early and late bite are the times that you want to capitalize on. You may see a brief feeding window open up during periods of increased wind or temporary cloud cover. My go to Summer techniques are swimbaits, carolina rigs, shaky head worms, and drop shots. I mainly throw my moving baits, like crankbaits and top waters, in the mornings and evenings. However, the swimbait, which is also a moving bait, can work during the day when the wind picks up. I'm generally going to start looking for fish in the 20 ft range during this time of year.

Are you fishing 20 on long sloping points or just anywhere you find 20 feet? I grew up fishing Fork and the likes and these highland lakes confound me. Yesterday went out from first light til about 11. Probably caught about 15 or 16. Nothing over 2 pounds. Typical for me. Lots of dinks...rarely anything over 3 pounds. They were in brush just off points. Actually went all the way down to the dam yesterday for the first time. I was surprised that a lot of that riprap area is shallow! I assumed it would be the deepest part of the lake. Do you fish towards the main basin mainly or further up river? Thanks for the post!

Thanks GHST. I'm still interested in what kind of water in 20 foot you're finding them in. You can be 3 feet off the bank and be in 20 foot or more on this crazy lake. Are you fishing long sloping points? I've graphed a ton of stuff at 15 feet all the way out to 35 and am not seeing many big schools of fish. I'd appreciate it if you could share a little more info. I guess Finesse God gave us all he's gonna give us. Do you fish up the river past the Pedernales split a lot? I live in Jonestown and right now it's the only ramp I can get out on, so that's a long drive coming home thru the wave boats and jet fleas! Thanks!!
