Anyone using one of these portable car jumper as a battery to power their fish finder on their yak? Seems like it would offer excellent durability and really help to minimize weight and space requirements. But could use some specifics on how to make this work

The gotcha is that the jump-starters are meant to be connected to batteries. A number of them have a circuit that attempts to detect a battery and check polarity before they will turn on. Your electronics load won't meet this requirement. Some jump-starters have an over-ride, but that's dangerous to engage because it removes all safety features. An unintentional short circuit could blow up the lithium battery in the jump-starter. You would also have to rig up some way to safely connect the power (cut off the alligator clips, ruining the jump-starter for its intended use?). The list of issues goes on - bad idea in conclusion.

My better jump-starter was $125. Well, for $125 I could also get a decent 12V sealed lithium battery to use for electronics power. Why don't you go that route? I'm betting the other yak guys will tell you which battery they have found to fit the task.

I have an older "jump start" pack from harbor freight. got it from my daughters trash can.Couldn't jump start a bicycle. I took it apart and replaced dead battery with a 9ah feeder type. Drilled out some plastic, mounted 2 sets of Anderson power poles and wired it up. Holds a great charge and powers Fish finder all day. Bonus is, it has a 12v plug, small LED light and 2 usb ports that still work. Can charge it in the truck or attach a 15-20 watt solar panel when outside. All of my 12v electronics are Anderson power pole connectors, as I am a Ham radio guy as well.

I looked into it. Basically you get a 6-8 ah equivalent for about 90 bucks. The Dakota 10 ah lithium battery is 10 bucks more and I know it's being used for it's intended purpose. IMO it's stepping over a dollar to save a dime.

I have a couple of these for my live well. So far they are well worth the money.

Standard discharge for those is 1.2A. While his electronics might not be over that, the 6AH is a bit light. But, those are the category I'd go with - a small form factor Lithium, just a bit bigger.

Agree. I wasn't clear but I use 2 of them together so I get 12.8 volts with 12 ah. I have about $70 invested in both of them and they can't weigh more than a couple of pounds combined. They're really light.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking, but I'd like to ask: Do you use the pair together to run your livewell pump(s) if I understand correctly? Are there 2 recirculating pumps or one? I'm looking to comprehend what you get out of them in a day.

The livewell is a DYI I made for my kayak and it has one Atwood T500 pump that says the amp draw is 1.8. But one of the Miady 6 ah batteries ran it for 4 hours almost to the minute. Since 4 hours isn't long enough I purchased a 2nd Miady 6 ah battery but haven't ran the livewell yet with both batteries to see how long it will last. However if one lasted 4 hours I have a good idea how long both combined will last.

OP here's is a solid option for your fish finder battery. A lot cheaper than many other options and you can use a standard battery charger to charge it. I would put it in a waterproof case but this is a good deal.
