What are you using to turn your charger off while in storage after use.

This for me too. My onboard 4 bank MinnKota battery charger is fully automatic so I just plug it in when I get home and unplug it before leaving(usually!🤔😳). Even if you are not using a built in most newer chargers are fully automatic. Been no problem for many, many years! “Set it and forget it”!

Timer was only 12 hrs, it takes my MinnKota longer than that to cycle thru . So timer didn't work.

I don't...leave my Minnkota charger plugged in 24/7 unless a thunderstorm is happening. Then I just unplug it until the next day. This process hasn't failed me as of yet.

What timer did you find with 12 hours before shut off?

I'm 75 miles from my boat storage facility so I really don't like driving that far to unplug mine. I may be overly concerned, but I have heard of fires caused by having the boat plugged in.

You can get a 24 hour programmable timer for about 20 bucks at Walmart. Same one that runs my Christmas lights every year. I had one on mine till the charger failed. I now use a Battery Tender on my starting battery and a 10 amp charger on my troll motor battery.

Yeah, I can see the conundrum then...sorry. Maybe look into this:

I’d be more worried about the timer self igniting, vs the built in type battery chargers with double fused leads.

ANYTHING that uses electricity can cause a fire. That is ... any consumer product. The manufacturers test the chargers for faults before they ever put them into production or offer them for sale. They don't want a lawsuit any more than we want a fire.

Most if not all of the fires we hear about are caused by something other than the charger. Such as a bad connection to the battery or a naked wire.

If it is going to catch fire, it will be while charging, not after it charges and shuts down. Of course, it could always get struck by lightning but that also happens to buildings that have no boat inside.

Here is one from Amazon that seems to do everything the home depot item does but you get 2 of them for $18 vs. $35 for one.
7 day digital timer with backup battery
With the "7 day programming" you could at least set the timer to run one day a week out of the 7. If you think 12 hours is enough, you could do 12 hours on every Monday, for instance. You'll want one that handles enough amps (at 110V); this one is rated for 15A, which is more than enough. (This could supply a 100A 12V charger.) The backup battery will remember the time and programming cycle. Having it off 6.5 days of each week should reduce risk substantially, but still let the charger maintain batteries if you aren't there for several weeks.

if it is a newer charger just plug it in and leave it, they have built in electronics to stop spikes etc.
I leave my minn kota 440pc plugged in 24/7 at fork, lots of storms and still charging like it should.
