I have always been freezing my fish fillets. White Bass, Channel/Blue Cats, and Striped Bass. I freeze them in plastic bags that are filled with water. They keep very good and I usually eat them in the year. Never had any go bad. How do you all keep your fish especially the Bluegill (Sunfish) ?

Freeze the gills in freezer bags with water. Note, cut off the sharp part of the back fin or it may puncture the bag. On the large gills, I remove the entire fin.

I never freeze sunfish or Rainbow Trout. I eat them usually the next day after I catch them. If not then for sure during the next three to four days. food

Side Note: White Bass, and crappie I do keep in the freezer, in a zip lock bag covered with water. thumb

My uncle was an exceptional bream and crappie fisherman. He threw many fish dinners for his church and local first responders. He would freeze his catch in old fashioned milk and orange juice cartons - no punctures and would neatly stack in his freezer.

He also filled the cartons with water. We did that back in the day too. Works very well.

My Dad did the same thing. He also froze Quail in milk cartons. Always tasted great when we cooked them up! food Problem is that milk cartons are hard to find. You can still find orange juice cartons around but a lot of the milk/orange juice cartons have been replaced by plastic jugs. juggle

We freeze the fillets individually on non stick trays, then vacuum seal in bags with a foodsaver. That way, you can open the bag and get however many out that you want and easily re seal the bag. Takes up much less freezer space too. Oh, and I will only freeze white bass or hybrid/ striper fillets. Catfish and trout we will eat fresh, I don't think they freeze well.
