If I plan it my wife will screw it up. I tell her to plan it and I pay.

Agree, and it takes way more planning when both the wife and the girlfriend go.

roflmao HEY NOW! Y'all leave the koi pond alone! roflmao

I was talking about how we used to go to Rockport for a planned week of sitting on the side of the bay and fishing all night.

We usually do one big family vacation each summer with my mom, my sisters, and their families. One of my brothers-in-law is off for about a month before we go (ISD athletic trainer), so he likes to have the days filled with things to do. My sisters are usually okay with it, but my other brother-in-law and I like to play it by ear. I've been working right up until the day before we leave and will have to work the day after we get back...and I want to relax, dang it. I live by my calendar when I'm working...and I don't want to do that on a vacation.

Having said that, I do prefer to have the accommodations worked out before we leave and the rental car situation taken care of about 1 month out. Beyond that just a general idea of what we're going to do. It's much more relaxed and I'm much more relaxed, so we all enjoy it more....

Don't go spontaneous on the hotels in South Dakota. Makes for a long night of driving across the state looking for a room.

that's understandable if you are driving across most of the midwest but a lot of this country and canada has some great scenery especially the far west and northwest....the motorcyclist have a great saying "it's the ride not the destination" that is really true in many parts of north america....

My thoughts too, especially the way things are going now.

When it was just my wife and I, we would just pack up and go. Sometimes Vegas, Lake Tahoe or Atlantic City, sometimes just an overnight trip to gamble in Louisiana. Now that we have our son, a little more planning is required. So I guess it just depends on what stage of your life you're in.

We research accommodations pretty good, typically have 3 or 4 places we want to eat at and beyond that it's whatever. If we are driving we will leave a day or 3 early and hit random stuff on way. Time permitting
