Which is a better vacation? one that is planned to a T, or spontaneous get the heck out of dodge and just go?

give examples if you got'em.

I kinda like to have it planned to at least have accommodations. It really depends on the destination. We are talking about heading on a trek west to Carlsbad, monument valley, Grand Canyon, etc. thereโ€™s a lot of empty space on that trip so we are planning the point a to point b stuff fairly tightly, food and gas considerations too.

If your going to a city or popular vacation spot, most of that works itself out

Best one is throw some clothes in the car and start driving. All you know is what time you've got to be back.

Planned, and always be prepared with a couple of back up solutions for potential hiccups and problems.

We have figured out that if we just pick a destination and get there and just do what seems fun at that moment things go a lot better. Too many times we have overplanned and literally ran so much during a vacation that we forgot to slow down. Past several years we have let our mood each day lead s to what we wanted to do once at destination.

My last vacation I planned the night before for whatever I was going to do the next day. That assumes you don't need reservations further in advance for an activity of course. It sure made it nice because I could plan around the weather, traffic/weekend/crowd expectations, whether I needed to make a lunch, whether I needed to get up earlier or later, etc.

have driven to all 48 states (except rhode island, from one end of canada to the other plus alaskan highway and never made a motel reservation and really never had a problem finding a motel room...always liked to just get in the car and go,stopping when and where i felt like it...I have made motel reservations when I fished bass tournys if it was a small town and I knew motels would be full.....

I don't travel just to travel. Never have figured out why that's fun for some people. I go somewhere because there is something there that I want to see or do. Mostly do.

Then again, there's also something to be said for sitting on my pier for a week with nothing to do but fish.
