I have recovered sufficiently from my hip replacement surgery on June 18 to get back out on the lake again, and yesterday I went on a scouting run. My aim was to find and catch 10 fish at a spot then move on to find other spots holding fish. I headed to Key Ranch Drop-off but it was occupied. I checked Key Ranch North but none there, then found a good bunch at Old Pond Dam (not on map). Caught 11 there in 18 fow then checked Merimac Point and nothing there. Went straight to Spillway Hump from there and found big bunch on the south finger in 25 fow. Left there when count got to 20 and checked north finger. Caught 4 hybrids there 20 to 23 inches and 2 cats. From there went to Enchanted Isle Ridge and it was covered with fish. Caught 10 more there in 20 fow then checked the Rock Pile. Nothing there so headed to Iron Wall Hump where I found a bunch on southern tip of it. Caught 10 more in 25 fow and another cat there then went home. I was out from 3 to 6 PM and ended up with 40 whites, 4 hybrids and 3 cats.

Wasn't sure what I was going to find. About this time of year I usually have to go to a #2 Mepps and fish shallow (10 to 15 fow), but deeper pattern on #4 Mepps is still the ticket. Water quality is clear.

Dennis thank you for the report. When you found fish in the deeper water, were they suspended or hugging the bottom?

ps We have never met but I have followed your posts for years and utilize your Mepps technique often. Thank you for sharing your success and teaching us to be better fishermen! Good to hear you are getting more active on the bionic hip... keep up the rehab regiment and the new/improved joint will serve you well!!

Glad you're feeling better. I saw your boat was out on Sunday but i didn't see you on the water. Also had good luck on the school at Iron Wall on Sunday. Some of the fish at iron wall were suspended off the south end of the hump in a little deeper water. 30ish feet deep, but the fish were still around 25. once i got to 26 feet they were on the bottom as well.

They were on the bottom up to about 5 ft from bottom.

Took friend Paul H. out yesterday from 4 to 6:30 PM, and we caught 103 (100 whites, a short hybrid, a cat, and a nice yellow bass). We also had one legal hybrid break-off and one pull-off. We fished 3 spots: east end of Long Ridge in 27 fow, Mid-lake Hump in 24 fow, and Iron Wall Hump in 25 fow. They never stopped biting at Iron Wall Hump, and we chose to quit after reaching 100 whites. All caught on #4 silver Mepps reeling up from bottom.

On Wednesday I checked the dam area and found lots of fish on Greenhouse Ridge in 26 fow.

Hey Dennis, I took neighbor Steve and his grandson out this morning. We caught 100 at spots you suggested, plus Merrimack Point and Game Warden. Some were shorts but still grandson (Reed) had a BIG TIME! He thinks the Mepp's Technique is quite the way to fish. Also I caught quite a few on my Big # 5 ---thinking I'd catch hybrids. But most whites caught on # 4. (My clones of course!)

Thanks for the tips and glad to hear you are back on the water.

God bless you!

Hi everyone. I'm new to CC Lake. We purchased a lake house in Key Ranch 1.5 years ago and I've been living here mostly full time since the shutdown in March. I'm a long time largemouth fisherman but I'm trying to learn to fish for white bass and hybrids.

Dennis, thanks so much for everything you've shared, it's been very helpful trying to learn. In your first report for July, I was the person at Key Ranch drop off when you came by. Didn't know it was you until I saw your report.

As mentioned, I'm still learning -- only had my sonar on the boat for a couple weeks now. I can find fish but generally only catch 4 or 5 at each spot. It seems like by the time a mark them, anchor and catch a couple they move on ? Unfortunately I'm fishing from a deck boat right now without a trolling motor.

Here's some recent outings: (currently alternating between two poles depending on situation: one with #4 Chartreuse/White Meeps using Dennis' technique and a sliver slab when I need to cast far)

(as a largemouth fisherman, I don't have lengths :^) but weigh the bigger fish -- need to get a length marker in the boat -- right now I'm not keeping any)

Friday July 10th went out around 6 pm:
* Started at Staubach hump but didn't mark anything.
* Headed to St Annes point where I had caught a 2.5 lb hybrid the evening before. I marked some fish but only caught 2 sandies all at the end of the underwater point in 25 fow.
* On my way back from St Annes point ran over some fish breaking water near Crappie Island Point SW. Turned around but couldn't find the school. I then moved over to the end of the point in 25 fow and marked some fish that were hanging out on the bottom. I anchored and caught 2 really nice 4 lb hybrids, 2 sandies and 1 catfish.

Saturday July 11th 6:30am
* Went back to St Annes point but didn't find any at the drop off. Moved out away from the point where they were hitting the top the night before. Marked some fish but by the time I anchored they had moved on. Did this several times before I got frustrated and left.
* Fished several other spots (Staubach, Merimac, Key Ranch drop off) with similar results and left empty handed.

Saturday July 11th 2pm
* Decided to head out in the heat of the afternoon where there wouldn't be many boats and maybe the fish were more in staging mode instead of chasing.
* Found fish at the southern outer elbow of Spillway hump. I would catch 1 fish ever 10 minutes. Just when I decided to leave I would catch another. Ended up with 5 keeper size whites.

Sunday July 12th 6:30am
* Went to Key ranch drop off but didn't mark any fish, just some bait fish and carp hitting top of the water. Saw what appeared to be some white bass hitting the top further down the lake but decided to stick with trying to mark the drop offs.
* Went to

Ok, now that at least contributed something (my piddly fishing reports :^)), I have some questions:

#1 Do I need a trolling motor to keep on top of the schools or am I doing something wrong which is keeping me from catching more than a few fish at each spot ?

#2: My Humminbird doesn't show a hump where Iron Wall hump is marked on Dennis' map. Can you guys help me identify it ? This is what I see in that area ?

Thanks Dennis. I will be there in a couple of weeks and with all you have shared I should be able to get my grandson's on some fish.

Ron, you need to get the detailed topo map chip set for Humminbird. They have one that includes all the mid-south USA lakes.

Re trolling motor: You need a way to keep your boat in place after you locate a concentration of fish on the bottom. An anchor works, but a trolling motor with iPilot is better.

Re where fish are now: They are in a deep pattern - 20 to 30 fow - around the edges of deep humps. I cannot find any now on shallow (10 to 15 fow) structures. Friday and today there were large concentrations on the east end of Long Ridge and on the south and SW edges of Iron Wall Hump in 24 to 30 fow.
