Hey guys,

We’ve got a lake by our place that’s pretty shallow (maybe 2feet max) at least from where I can cast to on the bank. It’s got a lot of heavy grass mats on the bottom so I don’t think my usual crankbaits or swimming soft plastics would work. I’ve caught one small bass on a tiny spinner bait before, but I’m looking to try my hand at top water.

1) what would y’all recommend for fishing a lake like that
2) it’s connected to the Brazos and people have seen catfish and gar and tons of small baitfish too. Has anyone had experience with gar or catfish hitting top waters? Thinking of throwing a chug’n spook or a frog.

Always experimenting and learning!

I'd use a frog- either the standard topwater frog or a horny toad which will be weedless and buzzed on top. Also a fluke texas rigged and weightless. Maybe add a splitshot for weight or a swivel to prevent line twist.

Rapala makes a floating and real shallow running 2-hook silver minnow. I’d try that.

And, several times I have caught 2 and 3 pound catfish on a top water bait. Always along the edge of a pond. It was a complete surprise.

I’d start with a small Academy H20 xpress frog
Green/chartreuse
Or
Black
Or
White

Heavy power rod and 50-65lb braid

Agree with throwing a fluke also; using a 4/0 Gammakatsu superline hook
With that much grass, I’d throw it on the same set up at the frog
With flukes in grass, set the hook as hard as you can.

Went out there and threw around a spook without too much luck... looked like a lot of top water action tho I saw and heard fish hitting the surface. Only managed to trick a turtle into investigating the spook :’)

Never fished a frog before I have a few tho, what sort of retrieve do I use? What are y’all favorite retrieves?

I’ll be heading out there tomorrow early morning with the frog. Practice practice practice

I it doesn’t get much pressure I’d try a buzzbait. A weightless fluke is also worth a try.

Not a topwater but throw a rooster tail. Caught quite a few catfish on them.

I'd go with an unweighted fluke soft plastic, watermelon w/chartreuse tail is my go-to. You can rig it weedless then fish it as a (nearly) topwater, mid depth, or let it fall to the top of the vegetation and twitch it up. Good luck to you , whatever you choose.

Rabbit or squirrel hair #2 or #3 Mepp. They stay up good if you don't let it sink from the start.
You wont be able to keep em off that thing.
