Can you only have 5 hooks per jug? I just read that on TPWD and wanted to make sure I was interpreting it correctly.

How about posting a link of what you were reading? I've give an interpretation, but I'm not going to go looking for where it is.

It’s not illegal. It’s just their definition. If it’s over 5 hooks they call it a trot line.

Wrong.

The difference between a jugline and a trotline is the way it is used. A jugline is free-floating and a trotline must be attached to a fixture at both ends. A throwline is attached at one end.

There’s zero reason to put 5 hooks on a jug though.

Plus if you get a 20-30 # fish on bottom hook, you better be pretty careful of those 4 hooks above it if fish tries to take off. Easy way for an ER trip for hook removal.

you are correct, I would play it safe too what difference is it going to make if you don't have that extra one or two hooks over 5 haha. I only do upto 5 on mine and the most ive landed was 3 on one jug

I have always used 5 hooks on jug line and 1 time in my many years of fishing I have caught 4 fish at one time. All weighed between 8 and 15 pounds. Man I still have a smile on my face and camp fire stories about that jug. Most of the time it is either 1 or 2 cats per line. We usually put our jugs in about 30' of water hooks spaced evenly from top to bottom. Some times they bite on top 2 some time on bottom 2 seldom on that dang unlucky middle hook. Mostly blues on top and yellows on bottom, not a hard rule just the norm. But 5 hooks lets you cover the whole water column better. Takes lots of bait for a bunch of 5 hook lines. If you notice a pattern you can only bait certain hooks, but sometime you can get surprised. Or if you build lines with swivels you can take drops on and off to suit your needs.
And never let anyone tell you any bait works better than fresh caught cut shad on blues. Yellows prefer live perch on bottom hooks.
P.S. one last tip, use fresh cut shad not frozen. Read this rule again and then experiment with any kind of bait you want. I have tried a bunch. Channels will bite on frozen bait shrimp.
