Looking for some advise on how to remove some spots on a black Mercury cowling. I used some wax and rubbed the spots with little success. I was curious if a dose of rubbing compound will remove them or cause noticeable damage to the finish. Any tips are much appreciated and thanks.

9% white vinegar? But I'm surprised the wax didn't work.

The best thing I have found is hydrochloric acid. I get it in a diluted form in a product called Purekleen. I’ve been using it for 2 years. I spray it on wipe it with a wet bench brush rinse it off and go in the house. I imagine toilet bowl cleaner would also work but I haven’t tried it.

Lime-a-way. Spray it on dry surface, wipe with a wet sponge then rinse. Wax afterwards.

I use the Starbrite boat guard. Great on scum line, metal flake and on my cowling. Good stuff.

50/50 9% vinegar and distilled H2o. Using this for yrs without issues. Spray wax after.

Ducky’s water spot remover has worked the best for me. Especially on the mercury cowlings.
