Well if you aren't going to tell us how you have your Carolina rig set up it will be difficult to tell you how to fix it.

I use the Dobyns 804 and find that it works great. You do have to cast it side arm style, not overhead. I use a 3/4 oz weight and it will go a long way on 12 lb flouro. (I plan to upgrade that line though.) I use a 2-3 ft leader.

I was using a 7’ MH rod before and it just wasn’t right. I don’t know if it was too short or had the wrong action but I switched to the 804 and now I can sling it a long way.

Sorry all. I now realize how my wording messed this thread up. I meant the weight of the bait vs. the actual weight working against each other. I was using a 5/16 oz bullet weight. To light. Will switch to something heavier. Like 3/4 oz.

3/8 - 1/2 oz is plenty, Use a bobber stopper for 1-2 ft leader. I use 3/16 on edges of Hydrilla.

I usually use 1/2 ounce weight, bead, bobber stop, swivel with 3' leader then hook. I cast mine overhand but the key is when you bring it back to cast you have a little half circle to get the momentum and everything in alignment to start your forward motion. Ken Smith explained it pretty good in one of his videos. I have had too many backlashes throwing side arm, bait hits trolling motor, console, motor etc. The key with the half circle on the back swing is making sure your weight is ahead of the worm when you cast.
