Do you fish for them on the kayak or use the kayak to set out the bait? I used to fish the Trinity River all the time. Always wanted a kayak to run the big baits out. Caught some huge fish! A gizzard shad scaled and de headed was my best bait. Mullet the same way was second.

We are going to do both from the yak and from land. I second the gizzard shad, just is softer than carp or mullet.
That would be a blast. 100 + lb fish pulling you around in a kayak! I’ve caught a few big bass in mine and that was fun.. big gar and your in tow! Lol
It is. I have always targeted large species fish. Ive never even tried to bass fish other than sandies. Ive had all sorts of things from 8+ ft sharks, sailfish...failed, 75-80lb cats. It is fun. They all fight so different from each other. Gar dont really seem to fight till they are at the boat, then its on with mouth wide open. Ive never actually landed a big gar. I have had them so close it hurts. On the sand but then flop, break off and gone. This time we are going more equipment ready than ever. Plus, my son has to catch one.
You know back when I was gar and cat fishing. I would catch those big gizzard shad for gar bait but cut the heads off Leaving a little extra meat and save them. Awesome blue and flat head winter and spring bait. Caught some great fish on just heads in the cool months. I used live bait in the summertime and fall.
