Since I don’t have all the answers to all of our bass fishing questions, I’m going to ask our resident experts...

1. Under what conditions would you use an under spin, how heavy of line, how heavy of an under spin and what kind of line (not brand but kind)?
2. When fishing a chugger or a popping style of bait (iovino splash it, yellow magic or pop-r), how heavy of a mono do you use, the heaviest you can get away with or what?

I use braid on all my rods usually 65lb as its about the same as 20lb mono thickness. As for when you use underspin I would say in open water. Only time not to use it would be casting right into thick mossy grass or because you dont want that presentation.

Can't answer the underspin question. I throw a Yellow Magic/Pop R style bait on 50lb braid

I throw a pop r on 15lb Big Game with a loop knot on bait casting equipment. I don’t really use spinning equipment for bass. I use them 100% of the time for crappie. I bought a set up for bass. 30lb braid on it but I have never used it. I can cast a bait caster with nothing but a worm and hook with no weight so I haven’t ever seen a need. I bought it for a shaky head rod. I use a bait caster for that too. I see guys use them all the time. I’m not knocking it. I just love the pin point accuracy of the bait casting equipment. I can’t throw a spinning reel with the same control. My .02

He’s talking about an under spin style of bait, not a spinning reel.

Good info on the pop r style of bait though!

I throw an underspin where I would throw a squarebill crankbait (around docks, timber and points) plus over the top of submerged hydrilla...it rips thru pretty easy and the bass will hammer it

I throw a 1/4 oz popper on 12 # mono. Haven't been broken off in years. Have had some thrown however.

While I only fish under spins with small swimbaits on 15 # Seaguar Invix

Yep. Braid for top water. It floats.

20lb braid for top waters and I throw the under spin everywhere. Just use the appropriate weight for the depth and speed you want to fish

+1

I throw poppers on 30# braid. Have tried mono leaders but it's tough to get the leader short enough and still maintain targeted casting accuracy. Key for me is throwing a popper on a softer rod like the Dobyns 703c. No need to set the hook on em and the softer rod helps keep the fish from pulling off.

If you can't find em wind em.

I like yellow magics on high quality copolymer. Izorline xxx or trik fish. Braid on the bigger walking baits and buzzbaits. I like an under spin on 12-15lb around docks and deep schools
