Several guys here at work are getting them, I hear them saying you get a tax rebate but it isn't applied the first year but is split up into 2 years. Also their electric bills are basically nothing but depending on who your provider is they might even owe you. I'm a little skeptical. What does the OT say?

When I researched solar a few years back it would have taken somewhere along 22 years to break even. Not the best ROI in my opinion. Also they are ugly eyesores IMHO.

I always try and consider what a potential buyer would think. Me personally, I would not even look at a house that had them on there. So there is that to consider as well.

Are their extra insurance cost for these, especially in area with frequent hail and high winds? Looks like they would be very vulnerable.

Oncor is offering a plan that they will own the solar panels, install them, and maintain them and sell you back your electricity at a reduced rate. In other words, you are giving them the real estate to develop energy for free but they give you a break on your rate. Not a good deal in my opinion.

if you want your own electricity go with wind here, small wind turbine in the back yard takes up very little space and our wind is fairly constant.

not all of them look like a plane prop either.

stick this in google / wind generator residential

When you come up here next weekend I'll show you how to get completely off the grid. Ask your wife how she feels about being Amish.

The statements are correct that you can bank enough power and sell some back to the electric providers. The statement about a 20+ year payout is also correct, even when assuming a monthly sell back to the power company.

I wouldn't mind buying a house that had them already installed, but I probably would not make the investment myself.

I would like to see the Tesla solar panels come to the market. They look just like shingles.

Be sure to install a new roof before installing the panels. Solar panels and windmills depend on government subsidies to be cost effective.

Over half the price of solar panels is for the installation. There are kits for 10 or 12 grand where you can install them yourself and save ~50% of the price. We are looking at getting some this year or next. You can do the complete install and then hire an electrician for the final hookup to the power box if you don't feel comfortable with it. Pay someone a couple hundred bucks instead of 10 grand 🤷‍♂️
Cuts ROI in half 🤷‍♂️

The Tesla stuff is out, but pretty pricey. Approximately $42,500 for a 2,000 sqft per what I've read. I re-roofed last year. It's the only time to really even consider such an option. With a 3,600 sqft roof and nobody local doing those types of roofing, cost was a non-starter. Plus the solar shingles only have a 25 year life, my new roof cost less than 30k and has 50 yr shingles.

May you be treated the way you treat other people, today and everyday!
