A while back I read great a post on here about fishing the crappie spawn. Wrote many notes inside my jig box since I cant remember what day it is, much less something that detailed. The other day I was out and decided to try to find some crappie on brush. I don't normally crappie fish, but nothing else was hitting. One of the notes I saw was to use a pink head in dirty water. Something else about black and chartreuse in dirty water. I thought I would give it a try. I tied it on and thought nothing would hit anything that looked like that. Was I wrong. For the first time in my life I was catching crappie by more than accident. I even caught two whites on it.

What is it about that color that would ever work? What are the other basics for jig color/selection? I had a lot of fun and want to try to replicate it soon.

That combo will work in a lot of different water conditions. A lot of it depends on what they are feeding on. Since the lake close to you is always dirty, just about any body color with a chartreuse tail will work. Try some shad colors the next time you are out with pink or chartreuse head. You will replicate your success.

Whenever you feel the need to use them but they are not needed.

Haven't used painted jig heads in over 15 years and catch a bunch when I can find active fish.
What lure(s) were you using and size?
Line type, pound test?
jig weight, hook size?
depth fished?

The combination of all the above choices can make or break an outing. One day alone catching fish on something doesn't mean much until it's used again and again. Plus, if fish of different fish species are caught, you got yourself a winner! Confidence in anything lure related is huge, but it can go away just as fast with a lure ending up in the lure storage graveyard.

But here's my theory (guess) why my jig head preference is unpainted:
If I want a certain size lure, a painted head makes it appear larger.
A bright jig head paint job may distract a fish's attention from the lure or may even cause it to be rejected.

Not saying bright jig head paint jobs don't catch fish - my first smallmouth and many later were caught on a yellow pearl Mr Twister jig head and bright yellow Mr Twister grub. Would the lure have worked without the painted head? I'll never know.

Overhead spins I found last year did well trolled and then discovered that on cloudy days did even better cast & retrieving curl tail grubs.

I have used unpainted Jigheads and have for many years.

In the Spring I use small road runner heads that are white with black eyes.

I used to think that eyes or dots represented eyes to fish but then I figured maybe it's the dot bobbing up & down plus lure action that got strikes. No company ever made a crankbait without eyes so as of now I don't see a problem including them for a strictly visual (not anatomical) effect. In comparison, what do skirted tubes represent, if anything, to panfish or bass? Ditto spinnerbaits? But man do they all catch fish!

This topic always bring up some minor arguments.

I canโ€™t prove either way, but I tend to not believe too much in colors making a difference. My dad used to go after sandies quite a bit, and would make his own slabs. He would carefully paint them, and put eyes on them ,etc.

I used to love to sneak out to the garage, and paint smiley faces in the, or put 3 or 7 or 12 eyes on them. I would paint my name, or add some male characteristics. They all seemed to catch fish.

Use orange/red blend in the morning because fish like Tequila Sunrise, then after 12, go with chartreuse because the fish switch to margaritas.
