Only time I've ever caught one was at Ray Hubbard up at the north end of the lake on cut perch. Cool fish.

I saw a bass fisherman catch one in the river on Hubbard. He thought he had 10 pound largemouth but it was actually a bowfin that would have weighed around 14 lbs. It would have shattered they lake record but he was not interested and released her back. It put up a hell of a fight.

I catch them while bass fishing on Rayburn also. They seam to really like new spinner baits! If I’m throwing a old one I dont care about to much I never catch one. But if I break out a brand new one... it never fails! Lol

Once I was fishing the sloughs in Murvaul Creek behind the dam. I was using an H&H spinnerbait and casting in an almost dried up hole. Evidently the bowfins had eaten everything else because you could not chunk that lure in there without catching one. I caught them all ! Can’t remember how many, up in the teens at least, just threw them out in the woods for the coons to eat. They are voracious eaters and darn good fighters, but there are too many of them in some waters.

One thing that has not been said about the Grinnel is, that during their spawn they are a beautiful fish with blue & green iridescent fins. You would never think such an ugly fish could look that pretty. Have caught a lot of them on Millwood Lake near Ashdown, Ark.
