Do you use city water , or lake water in your bait tank?
To chill the water do you use ice cubes or frozen water jugs to cool the water?
Thanks

I use lake water. If I keep them overnight, I dump a bag of ice in there before I go to bed.

Lake water or rain water would be my choice, I never use city water for bait

Lake Water and frozen soda bottles. Bagged ice, which comes from city water, may or may not have chlorine in it. Chlorine will kill your bait.

General guidelines

If city water and ice then use product to eliminate chlorine
Cool water no more than 10 degrees under lake water temp
add a couple handfuls of pool salt
allow bait to purge in bucket for a few min prior to loading into main tank
a filtration system helps
a $35 12V bubbler from Academy helps a ton
The faster you fish up the bait from the time you catch it, the less all of that matters!

There is no absolute need to use "pool salt" specifically. While pool salt works (and only comes in large bags from more or less a specialty store), the key parameter that one gets from pool salt is available in many other salts also - use NON-IODIZED SALT. That's all that matters. "Stock salt" at Tractor Supply will likely be one of the cheapest options, just check that it has no Iodine. If it does, the bag will say so.

My son built a bait tank for his boat consisting of various filters and additives he uses. Details beyond my comprehension. He could explain it far better than me. Keeps shad alive for three days. I'll see if he would share it on here if I asked him. He is an avid striper fisherman.

True. I didn't feel the need to turn it into a chemistry lesson..

I just use pool salt. one bag at walmart is about six bucks, fits perfectly into a 5 gallon bucket with lid, and dissolves into suspension rather quickly. $10 all in
