I'm stuck working out here in West Texas and am currently fishing J.B. Thomas. I'm using cut shad and have been catching a lot of small cats like 11" or just barely 12", but have landed a couple 4 and 5lbers but my ratio is 15 dinks to 1 decent. How can i avoid the smaller fish? I've tried bigger cuts of shad, but that doesn't help. Should I just move on to a different spot and avoid this one? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Blues often run with blues of similar size. Those tiny fish are usually hanging around the small threads that hatched last year and they are in big groups. If your catching all dinks then move to a different location. I call em nursery cats and there are several areas in my lake that are loaded with them this time of year and you can sure catch a bunch of em if you downsize to a 4/0 hook. 1 lbrs hang with 1 lbrs and there will be 1000s of them together. 2-5 lbrs hang together you’ll see hundreds hanging together in a spread out group. The bigger the fish the smaller the pod. 10 lbr is a good fish this time of year and I find those around the hybrids most of the time. texas

1) Find the bigger fish
2) Fish a better lake
3) Try bigger baits

An old timer told me that if the dinks are biting, the bigun's aren't. And once the big fish start feeding, the dinks get spooked and move out.
