Do you use split rings on your crank baits or tie directly to the bill? Any other baits you put a split ring on or remove it when it comes out of the package? Do you prefer round or oblong split rings? Thanks

i use em on cb's, i take them off popper type baits and push the knot to the lowest point of the eye for better spitting. i like oblong but round works the same. just have to make sure your knot isnt tied to or slips into the split ring opening and damages your line/knot from rubbing the edges.

Have either of you tried the Norman speed clips?

I tried the Norman Speed clips until I lost a 5 pounder at the boat when the speed clip failed.

Haven't seen any clips or snaps in the stores that I would have confidence in. Now, there are some saltwater guys, and big swimbait fishermen that reportedly use certain brands without problems. But, I'm frugal and would rather just tie a good knot directly to the lure or split ring. If I found a good snap/clip, this would promote some complacency and I would end up not changing my line/leader often enough.

No clips. Just another part in the chain to fail.
I've never had a problem with split rings. Unlike some others, I tie in the split and the bait is free to work. Never had a problem doing it that way for many, many years.
On crankbaits, you should never tie "directly to the bill". There has to be a ring or something there to allow the bait to work as designed.

Most of the time I use heavy duty clips. Have never had one fail on me yet. The ones I use can like #4 clips hold 77lbs smaller baits I use #2 that holds 55lbs. Don't buy the cheap one they only hold like 10lbs. I like clips for fast changing of hard baits. Now it does give a slightly different action to the baits. So, If I need to get a crankbait deeper I will take the clip off and tie directly to the bait. This is a link to the kit I buy has a nice little case with them. Clips

Prefer oblong to the round ones. I also use the red clips from bass pro and love em! I keep 15-20 baits up front so change out a Lot and don't feel like retying. Of course I check my line for abrasions but has worked well so far.
