If you are planning a trip this summer. Water levels look like late July already...
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

That would be a fun trip. My first time to the Conejos River was 1973 with my Dad and brother. We caught lots of trout. Went back a couple more times in the 70's but not been back since. Camped at the Lake Fork campground about 2/3 of the way to Platoro. Great Memories. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2020/06/full-45380-56384-mike_and_dan_on_the_river_edited.jpg)

Hey kody I am assuming that the river is high early this year due to snow melt and or Platoro release. I don't know much about the Conejos but am planning to stay their for 2 days in late August or early September on my way to the Grand Mesa. I wanted to fish the river in several spots then kayak fish the lake for a day. I am guessing runoff should be over by then...Lawton

Runoff is over. Water levels are low. Late August is a great time to be here

Runoff was over in May this year..... really early. Early July was fantastic. Water levels are going to be low by late summer for sure.
The canyon accesses were fishing great. Hatches were about 3-4 weeks ahead of schedule. Pinnacles area was crazy good.
Big fish in the lower creeks too...... while there is still water in them.

I miss those wagon wheel pancakes at Skyline Lodge. I hope to get back one more time. For now, the time and drive from Alabama makes it unreasonable. My favorite fishing hole was where the Conejos entered the lake. A good hike for a younger than me person. But I would always have the dam and Mix Lake to enjoy.

I was there last year around Labor Day. The first day on the Conejos was pretty much a flop. I think some of the guys did better two days later up by Platoro. However, we did very well on the Rio do los Pinos in upper New Mexico, just a few miles south of Antonito. CO.

The further up you go towards platoro, the better the fishing tends to get.
