So once you have your rod/reel/tackle. What else is good to have as accessories when fishing off jetty and piers?

So far I have the following:
- Filet knives
- Net
- Pliers
- Stringers
- Gloves

I thought about getting one of those live bait containers but I was just in Jamaica beach this past weekend and frozen shrimp seemed to work well too. Any help is appreciated.

What else would be useful to have?

Well if you are planning to sit on the jetty all day then you will definitely need sunscreen and water. A piece of 2" PVC pipe cut about 5' long makes a great rod holder that can be stuck in the sand or wedged in the rocks. If you want to catch your own live bait, get a cast net, a bucket and a minnow bucket. You need a bucket to empty the cast net into if fishing the jetty. Then dump the bucket into the bait holder. Also use the upended bucket to cut your live bait on. Get a long line at least 20' long tied to the bait holder so you can keep it in the water. Paracord works well. Tie it off to the pvc rod holder.

If fishing live or frozen bait, you only need a single box of terminal tackle and some leader material. I keep beads, weights, and swivels, plus a few popping corks. That way I can rig bait in several different ways depending on the conditions. I also recommend pre-tying a few bottom rigs so they can be changed out quickly when you get cut off.

If I am using artificials I like to stay mobile, so everything I take with me is packed into a fanny pack. I carry the same stuff walking the jetties, wading the surf, or wading the flats. KISS. Pick your top handful of lures and that's it. My fanny pack contains 2 zara spooks, 2 rattle traps, a silver or gold spoon, a popping cork and terminal tackle in a waterproof box. I also keep an empty box to store lures after I use them. You don't want to put wet, salty lures back into your waterproof tackle box. Then I have 3 or 4 bags of plastics max- plumb/chartreuse, penny/chartreuse, and solid white are all staple. I've done some other colors, but always seem to revert to those.

I can't emphasize enough the minimalist approach. If anything I think I carry too many options, but I just can't help myself.

Great information. Thank you so much.

Sounds like you go out a bit. Where do you usually go? Having off every other Friday with work and living in Houston my plan was to head to Freeport at like 5am..figured if I get there early I can grab a sound spot and setup.

I usually spend a week in Galveston every year with the family, and get down there maybe 2 or 3 weekends beside that. I mostly fish the surf near Jamaica Beach, or wade in the West Bay usually just north of the SLP.

Where are those two locations at? I was just in Jamaica Beach this past weekend in one of those houses on the canal. What is SLP?

Sorry I have lived in Texas for past five years but when it comes to towns/locations I'm horrible. Place is so big! lol

Get a map of West Bay and study the roads and locations, that will help you with where folks are talking about.

The very best book on the Galveston area is: Honey Holes, it covers Galveston Bay and Surrounding Areas for Walk-in Waders and Kayakers, 2nd Edition. It was written by Ray Crawford.

Okay, see the below:

SLP is San Louis Pass. Very south end of Galveston Island. When you hear fishing the surf, that is talking about the Gulf side of the island off the beaches.

might pick up a cast net for bait if you like live bait. it'll get you some good bait and the kids love doing it. i wouldn't get one over 4' if the kids are using it.

A fish measure/ruler and the Texas parks and wildlife outdoor annual app on your phone so you can look up different regulations and fish lengths and bag limits. Also, A pier net can be invaluable in landing a larger fish from a pier or bridge. I have one similar to the one below.

If your going to pier fish a lot get a garden wagon and mount some pvc pipe for rod holders. Drop net is a good idea. An umbrella chair if you plan on sitting. If you're going to be a jetty walker golf shoes help keep you on the rocks when the sidewalk ends. Carry a tide chart with you too.

SLP is a DANGEROUS place to fish. Stay out. That area has taken too many lives. Shifting bottom sand, undertow, people not wearing PFD's (wading or in kayaks. This is just a warning. I believe the County has posted no fishing zones down there. If Sea Wolf Park is still open, that's a good place to fish...off the pier or channel areas. Please adhere to local bag limits and slot limits on some fish.

I feel like I should make a clarification on my statement above. V-bottom is correct regarding the pass. You can fish from the shore at the SLP, casting out into the water. You can drive on the beach there and fish from your tailgate, and there will be lots of company with you. But do not wade or swim in the pass.

You can wade the flats in the bay to the northeast of the SLP. Take any precautions necessary for wade fishing in saltwater, but the currents of the SLP are not in play there.
