Do Crappie tend to like standing timber over manmade brush piles this time of year, or any time for that matter? The BP seem to be pretty bare right now and I’m hearing timber is the deal. What do y’all experts say?

I'm not an expert, but I've been finding them in standing timber 20-25 ft deep at Choke. Crappie have been handing from 15-20 FOW in the trees. Also picking up a few bass, gaspergoo and catfish when jigging for crappie. I can usually pick 1-2 fish off a tree before moving on. I have found a coupe of spots concentrated with some good sized slabs. I been catching lots of 9-10's too.

Kind of what I’m talking about. Talked to a guy at south shore on Friday and he led me to believe deep timber was the deal. I didn’t listen and hit 15+ BP and ended with 14, that was with 2 of us fishing. I’ll try again on Friday and change things up. A lot of these BP I hit are usually loaded but that was pre-spring.

Crappie are like all the other fish as they follow the bait. . Look for them stacked on docks in shaded areas early am and in the evening as they push shad under docks. Look for them on points close to channels on any structure. I’m finding them still kinda scattered on docks timber and brush. Stick and move stick and move is what I’m doing and it sometimes can be a work out. There today and gone tomorrow. No bs. One day I slay on docks and the next day I go back expecting the same result and it’s not on like the day before. So I bounce to brush and bingo. Then the next time out it might be timber. As it heats up they will be on pylons too. The advice I can give you is have a lot of options. I see the summer pattern ahead and honestly I do better on the summer and fall pattern. I slay in the fall on brush and some timber the most. Stick and move. Stick and move as every outing can be different at times. Don’t give up just have options. Oh and follow the bait.

Great info jig master! I’ve been trying to get off docks and work more standing timber on RC lately, haven’t done that well. Hit probably 40 trees and only 8 have been productive, 1 or 2 fish then off to other trees. Lots of work.

This is a brush pile from Waxahachie last week. I saw numerous others that were the same. They were scattered in the timber.

Nice pic, not sure how patterns differ regionally but I’m in South Texas. Thanks for all the feedback, I’ll be trying both on Friday after the morning bass top water bite!

If your piles are bare, something is wrong. Try going shallower/deeper or also try more mainlake or back in the coves till you start catching them. As a general rule, brush is for numbers and timber if for bigger fish. There is a guy on falcon catching them really good on brush. Should be the same all over the state. Sometime tall piles are better and sometimes smaller ones are better just depends.
