I'm right handed and use right hand crank casting reels. Until 10 days ago I flipped and pitched right handed and do the switch. I cut my right index finder pretty bad on a piece of sheet metal a few days ago. Ended plans to fish for awhile but I started practicing pitching left handed. I did not take long for it to feel very natural. Now I can't imagine why I never did it before. I am just as accurate and will get many more pitches in a day. Now I am working on casting left handed. THAT IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT ANIMAL TO TAME!

I am right handed and have been using left handed reels since my childhood for this exact reason. My grandfather taught me. Back then, it was mainly for top water, but it translates to all styles.

I am left-handed naturally, so from day 1 the rod stayed in my left hand 100% of the time. I never have to do the awkward hand-swap so many do. I can't begin to guess the number of times a fish took a flipped lure immediately upon entry. If I were in the middle of a hand swap, I would never have been able to set the hook. As mentioned, the efficiency is higher, but I like being poised to set the hook at all times. It's great when throwing a buzzbait because I'm able to get it up and sputtering almost instantly.

I tried swapping hands a long time ago. Had bought a nice left handed reel from a guy. Flipping wasn’t a problem if recall. After setting the hook on a fish and trying to reel it in, almost broke my right wrist due to a lack of coordination. I haven’t picked it up since.

I am the same as you. I have been pitching and casting left handed since I began as a kid. I can't pitch right handed very well but I cast just fine, it just doesn't feel right though.

I did that when I first started. The way to correct it is to use your forearm to set the hook.
I would not bend the forearm and it hurt to use the whole arm to try to set the hook.

After I did a couple practice hook sets concentrating on bending my elbow and setting the hook with my right arm the same way I did my left arm I never had a problem with it.

I do not know why a right-handed person would want to cast with their right arm and switch the rod over their to left arm, but each to his own. I blame it all on those right handed Zebcos. Ha! My first fishing reel was a left hand Mitchell 300, so cast right, retrieving left was always the way to do it.

For me it is a dexterity thing. I am Naturally right handed, but I shoot (guns and pool) more naturally left handed. I can't get my left hand to do certain things that aren't coordinated with the right and my right hand is a little more power hungry, so finesse is not my right's strong suit!

Had the epiphany myself years ago. Kept an extra rod and reel at the house and forced myself to learn how to do it. I'd stand in the backyard and try to the metal fence posts or specific boards. Finally got the hang on it and it feels totally natural to me. Couldn't imagine going back.
