To learn with a cricket is hard to beat. Single/bolt shot. Super inexpensive easy for a child to handle. Get a Henry for Christmas

If you want to go the kid size single shot route, skip the cricket. It has about a 1lb trigger. Yes, it’s safe, but the kiddo won’t learn good shooting habits. Go with the savage rascal. It has an adjustable trigger. But I’d skip both and go with the Henry youth size. Bought one a few weeks ago for my 7 year old girl. Her and momma both like it. I do too.

Ithica M49. Single shot Lever Action 22. Great little beginner gun. I think Stevens and Henry have made the exact same gun at some point.

I found this little CZ Scout

https://cz-usa.com/product/cz-457-scout/

Could just keep passing it down to the other kids as the older one graduates to a lever gun. I like that it has a single shot adapter and can take a small 5rd mag for a little more fun.

Basic gun to teach how to shoot and safety is all that is needed. Something like this is what I started on.

I remember starting to hunt with a .22. The big deal I remember was it being too heavy out front to hold it still to aim. I was about 6.

Got my 1st shotgun, a 20ga Stevens single shot at 10.

For a 4 year old get it as light as possible. Able to shoot shorts a plus.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

I bought my son a CZ Scout when he was eight. With a fixed 4X scope it is extremely accurate. The stock can be replaced with a full size stock in the future.

I'm pretty sure I have that gun but with a tube fed mag. My mom wanted me to join band so she told my dad to take me to a pawn shop and buy a trumpet. He saw this .22 and asked me if I wanted the trumpet or the .22? When we got home, my mom was PISSED! It's a big SOB, pretty heavy for a little kid.
