In the past few years I have been reading about the levels of Mercury and other stuff in the fish. I love to fish but have been out of fishing for a few years. I am currently looking to buy a boat with the intention of teach my kids to fish as well as do a little playing in the water. The lakes in proximity to me are Lake Spence, Colorado City, Moss Creek, Oak Creek, Allen Henry, White River, and Amistad. I have never heard anything about consumption limits for Amistad but have heard other things I believe about Allen Henry. Can any of you with more current experience on these lakes than me speak to this? I appreciate your input.

Thanks,
David

This is all I could find from the TPWD website.

Panhandle
Lake Alan Henry in Garza and Kent counties
Chemical of Concern: Mercury
For blue catfish, flathead catfish, crappie, largemouth bass and spotted bass, adults should limit consumption to no more than two, 8-ounce meals per month.
Children under 12 and women who are pregnant or nursing should not consume any fish of those species.

Seriously?? 2 8 ounce meals per MONTH? Wow...I'm no scientist but that sounds like very high levels of mercury in those lakes. I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express in January though.

Crappie swim in the middle of the water. I always feel they are safe and very tasty. I don't eat fish that feed on the bottom and/or don't have scales. Just my humble opinion.

If there is a problem with toxins on a lake or river TPWD will have a notation on the monograph for that water body on their website. If they donโ€™t mention any there is none.
