We will be in Galveston June 25-29 and are planning to book a fishing trip. We would like a mix of specks and reds for the freezer, then get our lines stretched hard by some larger catch and release fish. It seems most everyone is offering one or the other.

What trip do I need to be asking for? I explain what we want and get told "check out our rate page" and see either inshore only or jetty or offshore.

Also, why are most guides only fishing for 6 hours? If we leave out at 6am at daylight, we are done by noon? We usually fish south louisiana and fish until 3ish.

How are the specks in this area? We would love to quickly fill up an ice chest full of specks like we do in S. Louisiana...

Limits are definitely different than South Louisiana. A full day trip will cost you about $500-600 (8 hours). If you are wanting to catch mainly trout then don't opt for the jetty trip, and just do a regular bay fishing trip. Trout are thick in the bay right now and will be all summer. I fish Galveston regularly and the most consistent catches I see from guides at the boat ramp are Swamp Donkey Charters. I'm sure they book up quick so id give them a call as soon as you can. (Also the ramp I'm talking about is Galveston Bait and Tackle)

I haven't heard much good about Jetty trips...several have said they sit too long while not catching fish.

From what I remember, limits are MUCH stricter in Tx than Louisiana...I remember a few years ago we were wading by a rent house we stayed at and hardly anything we caught were keepers whereas based off a La trip we had just taken, everything would have been keepers in La. Even with smaller size limits, it was always still really easy to catch tons of specks and keeper reds.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes jetty trips can be a lot of fun. Mostly at the Galveston jetty you will catch lots of Sheepshead, Bull Redfish and black drum, however, it is hard to concentrate on a single species.

Yes, the length size is a longer here in Texas, 15 inches minimum for specks. Not to mention just about a year ago they changed the bag limit from 10 to 5. Even redfish here have a longer minimum size limit, 20 inches and you can only keep 3.

Also if you are interested, I know some guides in Galveston do afternoon trips for speckled trout and turn to gigging flounder after the sun goes down

Cool to see you are from Benton! I have some buddies that live there and some family in Monroe. I'm just ready for Horseshoe to open back up!

I have been in Benton all my life and graduated here in '89...if they have been here since Benton was actually a small town, I probably know them!

I think we have decided to go and try the state snapper waters and also maybe hit a few rigs!

You're going to have a hard time finding state water snapper in the summer, especially out of Galveston, unless you're ok with the 10 inch throwbacks. Snapper season WILL be open, so if you have a boat and can venture offshore, I'd head towards Freeport. MUCH deeper water and within 35 miles, you can get into 20+lb snapper if you have spots to fish.

I don't think a drive to Freeport would be in the cards, isn't it about an hour drive from Galveston?

Book a $75 trip with Galveston Party Boats...12 hour trip. 4 hours out, fish a few hours, and 4 hours back. You should get your two red snapper limit.

Capt Steve Gremillion does great mixed bag fishing trips. Very versatile angler for anything that is inshore to near offshore given the conditions.. Definitely worth the call
