Trying to learn CC for crappie. Catching a few, but nothing consistent. Son is losing interest fast, and thats the worst part...
Looking at Navonics maps, it shows some standing timber up north of the 334 bridge. Anyone catching crappie up there in timber? Is there good timber still there?
Reading that a lot of other lakes are doing well on standing timber now, on a summer pattern.
Just don't want to waste time if timber is not really there still, or not good fishing up there.
I have worked 334 bridge and north 198 bridge, but just nothing consistent.
I am making some pvc brush piles, but that takes time.

Thanks in advance!
Ken

Fish are on the both 198 bridges right now, use pearl White body, chartreuse tail. Brush piles in 12-14 feet of water should produce also.

Thanks for the help!

I fished the north 198 bridge at about 3 different depths last week, but was trying to do it between storms and all the holiday pleasure boat traffic. Will try that one again.

Will try the white - chartreuse. I had a little luck on blue body white tail last week, but really slow and spotty. Just trying to get my son on some fish... want him to feel the thump a few times. The one fish every two or three hours is not cutting it for a kid who is used to video games... makes it hard for me to compete! LOL.

thanks again

Sandies are going wild on Richland Chamber's it maybe be better to get him "hooked" on fish that don't require so much finesse to catch ..The lakes are up and some are murky.. also many are releasing water both hurt fishing?catching...JMHO

Bullcrappie,

Thanks for the suggestions. I agree with you about finding easier fish. I have my boat at the dock on CC and not easy to get to my trailer and move lake to lake, so kind of stuck with CC. However, I am hearing they are doing really good on sandies on CC also. Might shift over to those if I dont find some crappie soon. I just love eating crappie along with catching them. Dennis Christian just left some good reports over on the striper - white forum.

I did have a good conversation with someone last night, gave me some good tips and locations to try this weekend. Now I just need the weather - wind to play nice for a couple of days. I have been working full time during all this virus, trying to fish weekends, and it is almost funny how many weeks in a row there was nice calm weather during the middle of the week, then storms and or cold fronts hit on Friday - Saturday. God's sense of humor and telling me to go to church more I guess! LOL

Thanks again - stay safe.

Ken

Hey man, the whites/hybrids are so much fun for little ones to catch. My son is 3 1/2 years old and absolutely loves it. Those fish are easy to find and a great way to get them hooked. I'll be there this weekend catching them, so if you'd like to know where they are, I'll be happy to help. Not great at finding crappie, but I'm on the whites right now.

SSutton,

Thank you!

I will be there all weekend. I am up north towards Gun Barrel City area. Have electronics - down and side scan on the boat, but still learning to use the electronics... especially struggling with reading side scan. Getting better at it. Can find areas pretty easy, between Navoinics maps and Dennis Christian's maps.

Aluminum Bass Tracker, so if wind gets over about 12-15 mph it limits me on where I like to go on main lake, for safety reasons.

Would appreciate any and all help and locations. Feel free to PM me. I will try to remember to check this site through the weekend.

Ken,

Just when you think you have everything figured out, they don't want to bite good.... Well, I struggled this weekend and really could not get on them good. I rarely use down/side scan when I fish for whites, it's mainly chirp 2D and contour chip to find them. I can see where it might be helpful to try and track down crappie to use the side/down scan. Hopefully you had a little better luck than I did.

SSutton,

Thanks for the update. I fished the sunken island Sat. and Sun. mornings for a while until wind picked up a little. Lot of boats there. Caught a few, but was slow. Watched other boats, and no one was killing it... Those trolling and those verticle fishing were doing about the same. Just one here and there. My son did catch a 13.5" white, that he enjoyed fighting. Also saw a guy in a boat next to me catch a really nice hybrid. One of the largest I have seen on CC. Not sure how long or weight.

We crappie fished some also, and picked up a couple each day on bridge and docks, but was slow for those also. At least the weather was nice!

Take care,
Ken

The crappie are now relating to docks. Almost any dock with a good size dock area and 7+ feet of water seem to hold one on two ready to bite. The main lake docks also had a few white bass and small yellow bass. I have not tried any bridges lately but the shade and the crossmembers on the 334 are in for a visit.

I explored the timber in the upper lake a lot when I first moved here. That's stuff I love to fish. But, the tops are all under water unless the lake is close to three feet low, so it's hard to find the sweet spots, and by the time the lake is that low, most of the timber is too shallow. I never found consistent patterns and moved to the bridges and docks for most of my fishing.

Bridges have been good lately. I've caught more than 20 keepers each of my last five trips bridge fishing, and I don't stay on the water for many hours at a time. As the summer goes, there will still be lots of small fish on the bridges and docks, but fewer and fewer big fish. Kids will still have fun with those small fish, though.

Indigo with chartreuse tails on homemade plastics is the main color I fish. Deeper docks are better in the summer. On bridges, 10 to 16 feet deep, depending on which bridge. I catch plenty of fish dropping jigs straight down at the bridges, but there are days when they bite a retrieved double jig rig better. Use an extremely slow retrieve. It takes enough work to find the right cast angle, amount of time to let the bait sink, and the right speed retrieve, that it's better to stick to vertical fishing for kids. Good luck.

Bud why did you get rid of your Triton? It looked like a great boat.

The Triton was a great boat. But I'd had it 16 years, and I fish a lot, so it had plenty of wear and tear. It was time for a new one. I'm about to retire and wanted to pay cash for my new boat. The new Tritons were beyond my budget, so I got a new Tracker Pro Team 190 TX. It's also a great boat.

Anybody have any luck on Ceder Creek lately? I went yesterday and got hung up on 3 brush piles near the bridges but couldn't get a bite.
