Hey TFF!

Just had a quick question regarding lure fishing from the bank. What kind of lures do y'all use? Any special way of rigging a lure or retrieving a lure? Up until recently, I've mainly been fishing with spinning tackle and live bait, but recently I've managed to acquire a pretty nice baitcaster setup. I'd like to try lure fishing for the first time, so any advice for first time lure fishing would be greatly appreciated!

Plastic worm or plastic shad.
Just get it in the water. They will chase it as you pull it in

Just get a few 3/8oz spinnerbaits in white and yellow. Cast out and slowly reel back in.

Try Texas rigging some crawdad imitation soft plastics. Slowly, very slowly, drag them along the bottom.

Watch YouTube videos. They'll teach you a lot about different techniques.

As for spinnerbaits, I always did best with black and yellow skirted H&H with double spinners. And with the black and yellow Strike Kings, single spinner.

Doing well lately with Zoom speed craw soft baits in pumpkin.

Thanks everyone that has replied so far! How are topwater frogs and other hard-type lures? Do they perform well? Sorry if this is kind of a broad question.

Top waters are fun but they are best early early morning or at sundown.

I always keep some baby brush hogs in my back pocket to flip along the bank.

I agree with the other posters that soft plastic worms/brush hogs/shad/crawfish/frogs are the way to go for bank fishing.

Hard crankbaits I haven’t had too much success with on the bank, whereas I’ve had great luck with them in deeper waters on a boat. Also, these hard plastic lures tend to be expensive so its a harder pill to swallow when you snag one up and loose it on some brush or weeds by the bank.

The soft plastics are far cheaper and easier to replace and seem more effective in bank fishing.

Too water stuff does well in the mornings and evenings when fish come up to the surface to feed, but a bait that is weighted or sinks will usually outperform a topwater piece of tackle substantially.

Recently the wife and I were fishing with a bass tournament guy. He installed our Garmin gear and took us to a private lake to use the livescope and learn the basics. We caught a lot of bass in a short time. I paid close attention to the bait he rigged up for us. It was a Zoom speedcraw (the smaller size) in watermelon orange. In a Texas rig. I ordered some right after that. They showed up on Tuesday night. Mid morning Wednesday I rigged one up and walked over to the pond. Caught bass on second cast, 5th and 10th. Released them and walked back to the barn workshop.

Prior to using that new soft bait, I had thrown just about everything in my tackle box - hard baits, spinner baits, top waters, plastic worms, and deep divers, with no bites.
